20180523 NSW The Dish to Dubbo Zoo

Image
20180523 Arriving back in Parks to restock our supplies and check out the pub for a counter meal and as Desies been drinking too much we definitely need to remedy that problem and top up his grog. The Dish Built between 1959-1961 the Observatory was one of the first radio telescopes built as a big, movable dish.  It was the subject of the blockbuster movie "The Dish" and played a key roll in the television images of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. The moving part of the telescope weights 1000 tonnes, as much as two Boeing 747s, it isn't fixed to the tower, instead sits atop it with its own weight holding it down. 24-05-2018 I'm not really into Zoos but I've heard the Taronga Western Plain Zoo is worth a look and I must say I'm rather excited and secretly I think Des is to so we were up and on our way early to get the most out of our big adventure. We had every intentions to ride our bikes through the Zoo but with carrying two cameras it jus...

20180519 NSW Lake Cargelligo to Condobolin

Image
20180519 Des plots our next destination, Lake Cargelligo look nice Lee, situated in central NSW with two free camp sites right on the lake.  Travelling 231ks passing many little towns along the way that are a mere dot on the map and once again a lot of nothing but peace and quiet with the occasional farms in the distance. I wasn't kidding when I said there's a lot of nothing so I might just lay back with my feet up and relax, that's a 'long' way to the end. Run Roo Run, we don't mind this size it's the big Reds that concern us. The monument as you enter the town is of Mr & Mrs Charlotte Foster  who were strolling through pine shrub and turned over a piece of quartz which sparkled, so her husband broke up the rock which contained gold, like in a plum pudding he said.  H e traveling to the nearby town to secure miners rights and got on the piss spilling his guts of the find, on is returned the area was swarming with gold diggers.  At the en...

20189513 NSW Hay Plains to Hay on the Murrumbidgee

Image
20189513 After driving across the Hay Plains you have a pretty good indication that nature struggle to survive in this desolate landscape, known as one of the flattest places in the world, the plains are a long stretch of nothing as far as your eyes can see, with the exception of a smashed car the odd shed in the middle of nowhere and the occasional cotton farm, but I guess that’s what you get when you travel in theses remote areas. As remote as the Hay Plains are in a way they are actually quite surreal.  The cotton fields add another twist to the somewhat desolate surroundings. Someone's up to no good or is he just taken in the serenity, nop that certainly doesn't sound like Des. Now isn't this worth that long trip across the plains, our home for the next week, sitting up on the Murrumbidgee River (Brandon's Bend), who could ask for more. Off we go in search for wood when I looked over this log and this fellow was looking straight back at me,...

20180511 VIC Robinsvale to Balranald

Image
20180511 Ooo what new adventure awaits us now as we pass Gol Gol and Euston landing at the lovely town of Robinsvale, named in memory of Lieutenant George Robin Cuttler, killed in action during air combat over France in 1918. Wondering through the markets and look what I found, an 1896 Henry Ford replica of a Quadricycle built by a local residents. The town certainly has more to offer than other towns, if you want to brows through shops that is but after a while there all the same. Des always finds the most romantic places to camp, at least in this cemetery we were mixing with the wealthy, I'm thinking Italian's. The grave digger told us you could travel Australia for the price of just one of these, and a n example  of the head stones. 12-05-2018 After a lovely quite breakfast in the dead 😅 heart of Robinsvale we head back to town for a nice hot shower when we run into our mate from the cemetery, did you have a nice sleep as we all laugh. ...
