20260615 Qld Eumundi, Poona, Tuan to Boonooroo

20260615 With all the cleaning, mowing and packing the motor home all completed all thats left is waiting for the rains to piss off. We finally hit the road at 12:40pm and I can’t believe it but the sun is shining, it will be interesting to see what miles we clock up this trip considering we have no idea where we a going. We did however find out a friend is looking at a property at Boonooroo and thats one place we haven’t been, so thats a good start. We hit the M1, Bruce Highway passing the continuous roadworks when just before Burpengary the traffic lights flash 80kl down to 60kl then back to 100kl, no reason of cause. Heading north we turned off to Eumundi and parked in a car park at the back of the town so we were high and dry. I walked the town then stopped for a coffee and Lemon Meringue tart, thats my sugar fix for the day so I continue exploring the history of this town.

The old Eumundi Imperial Hotel, built in 1911, at a time when bullock teams and Jackaroos were a part of the times.

Early Eumundi was originally part of three large cattle runs, the district began to attract settlers after gold was discovered at Gympie in 1867. Permanent settlement started in 1879, and the township of Eumundi was established in 1890. With the arrival of the railway in 1891, Eumundi became an important centre for the timber and dairy industries. Sawmills and dairy farms flourished, and by the 1920s the region had become a significant dairying area, supported by butter factories at Eumundi and Cooroy.

It was in 1926 when fire destroyed the old hotel but it was rebuilt the following year with first-class accommodation, garage and stables but today this is what you get and if you stroll out the back you walk into the Eumundi Brewery famous for its crisp lager.

This is one of the first industrial sewing machine still in working condition, dating back to 1865, it was used to manufacture artificial limbs in WW1 and its a British United shoe machinery A1 Model.

Follow the path for a peak at the brewery and were kids can run wild in the play ground.

The Brewery for all to view.

The new added brewery where you can sit back and enjoy a cold brew and a feed.

A mural by John Murray.

This one’s for you Roster, it’s ready and waiting for your arrival.

This mural depicts winning entries from the Australian Body Art Festival, which is held annually in Eumundi.

We found one lonely yabbie crawling along a drain, I’m surprised Des didn’t catch and eat him.

Des and I wondered through the Eumundi Park late in the afternoon when we came upon a group of people doing Tai Chi, now that looks interesting only they stood in one spot for over an hour, boring we thought. We watched on with a beer in hand as the young ones roamed the grounds interested in the Tai Chi before joining in with the group. We were very surprised at the amount people out and about on a Monday night, even the Main Street was full of cars but the kids were all well behaved and there was no trouble, thank god.

20260616 We were woken by a street sweeper about 4:30am, but they do have the markets on Wednesday and we probably shouldn’t be parked here especially after a woman had a bitch about us parking in her spot, we quickly packed up and left to check out Boonooroo. Driving along the Tin Can Bay road while following the Toolara Forest. It’s 10:33am and we cross over to the Frazer Coast. I noticed an electric fence that goes on for ever, Des said it’s the Army reserve but I’m not so sure. We noticed a turn off to Poona so we turned off to check it out. A nice quiet town on the edge of the Great Sandy Marine Park. We spoke to a couple wondering to the beach with their dog who said the only problem here are the sandflies, apparently they get bad at certain times of the year, but then again their are a lot of mangroves here.

Toolara Forest is a 42,000-hectare landscape and is one of Queensland’s premier commercial pine plantation.

Des saw a sign for Poona so we detoured to check it out, Poona is a peaceful coastal village on the Fraser Coast, Queensland, situated along the Great Sandy Strait with views of K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), a great spot if your keen for some fishing not to mention the crabs.

Poona is known for its tranquil atmosphere and it sure does seem quite.

Here we looking out over the Great Sandy Marine Park from Poona thats so far has no high rises, lets hope it stays that way.

The only shop in Poona but it has a variety of good from 2nd hand to new not to mention good coffee.

Our next stop is Tuan, another small coastal town along our way and not a bad place to visit, it’s very pretty and peaceful, now this I could handle, no traffic or high rises but midges could be a problem.

We made it Boonooroo Point, we herd on the grape vine this is the area Dick wants to buy, it certainly hasn’t been built out, yet!

An aerial photo of Boonooroo, the bonus is no high rises and it’s very peaceful, a great place to retire.

We went from Poona to Tuan to Boonooroo and back to Tuan to camp the night at the boat ramp. A few drinks while wondering the streets then tuck into bed for a good nights sleep.

Night, Night
