20250608 NSW The Pubs in the Scrub, Gumborah to Grawin

20250608 The Grawin, is a group of opal fields that makes up, Glengarry, Sheepyard, and Mulga Rush. Opals were first discovered in 1905 by Charles Phipp while working on Morendah Station just east of Grawin, before mining was even thought of in this area.
It was in 1908 when Hammond Hill first discovered Opal and Grawin was established, then came Richard Hill in 1920, mining was a lot more difficult than that of today using a picks and shovels and was all done by the light of a candle.
It was in 1928, an opal named ‘The Light of the Worlds’, the size of a man’s fist and weighed 0.45kg was discovered causing a flurry of activity and inflow of miners seeking to make their fortune.

The entrance to the classic outback Sheep Yard Inn

Step inside and the walls are covered with quirky quotes and memorabilia.

Pool Tables of the outback.

SERVICE WALL where ex-military members can sign their names and connect with old colleagues.

This poor Chappy didn’t know what hit him when I snapped his $50 out of his hand for a photo.

What more can I say

Old relics cover the ground out the back.

Junk, junk and more junk but great to browse.

Karen and I enjoying a coldie at the Sheep Yard Inn, a Classical Outback Pub.

An excellent display of old truck as we walk the grounds.

Gary told me this is a petrified dinosaur balls, pretty heavy balls Gary.

Gary and Des living the dream, Des has always been a tit man.
Miners shacks and Private Property

Two down and one to go as we head to the Glengarry Hilton where once illegal grog was sold from the back of a rabbit chiller for the thirsty miners, it consist of an of old sheds, shipping containers and lean-to structures that was built by the miners in 1969.
Police were aware and many attempts were made to catch the then owner but back in those days the bush telegraph was much faster giving the patrons time to remove the illegal booze, the owner was never charged for selling illegal booze and in 1993 The Glengarry Hilton became legal by obtaining a liquor license.

Quirky signs like this line the street all the way to the pubs.

A couple of the local miners come out to say hi 👋.

One of the locals jumps in for a photo with the chicks from out of town.

The locals men corner and they were all keen for a photo.

There’s many opportunities for a photo and these old car are a great start.

Just another day checking out the sites and snapping a pic were we can.

Such talent in the scrub.

The Glengarry Hilton momento wine glasses with a resealable lids thanks to Karen, I scored one.
