20240520 So here we are once again back in Deepwater and parked in our old spot, how special it is to be able to connect to power, it’s like luxury especially when you’re travelling. Later in the afternoon Chris, a guy we meet last time we were here came to say Hi, then we joined him in the bar for a few ales with more of the locals.
20240521 We had the heater going all night and the van in the morning is still bloody freezing, let’s travel in winter he says, it’ll be great he says, ya sure if you like freezing all night.
Des goes outside to wash up and what he thought was a dish left behind turned out to be his frozen dish cloth, I told you it was cold.🥶
We left the Longhorn and headed back to the Common Campground for a few days, we have become very fond of the spot, it’s so peaceful and secluded and has heaps of wood.
We had a great few days enjoying our surroundings with no one in site, just the occasional car passing by and the only evidence is the dust off the dirt road.
Now if it was summer I could be paddling in the fresh running creek while enjoying a nice cold beer, but as it’s freezing that won’t happen.
20240523 We had a few relaxing days while watching the little REN’s hopping around looking for some nibbles to feast on while we sit watching the fire and taking in the stars. I’m sure this will be a place we will definitely return to again one day. We packed up and left for the Longhorn to catch up on some washing and a much needed shower, and another catch up with our new friends, the locals for a few drinks, as we do.
It’s that time of the evening so off we go to catch up with Chris, Pete and more of the locals with the added bonus of a few campers who joined us. Once again we sat around the fire and was entertained by Chris and Pete who were getting a bit pissie and in no time had us all in laughter with their funny antics, nothing changes at the Longhorn Pub, it just gets better.
We meet this guy whom we joined for dinner and he ordered the, John Wayne’s Kick Ass Rump, 500g of local grown Black Angus and believe it or not he consumed the lot, I’d hate to be his bowels in the morning.
We found you Pete, see you on our next trip to Deepwater.
20240524 We’ve been here a few times now and have never checked out the top pub, we’ve heard some not so good comments but we did stop to check it out. The lady behind the bar was very obliging and explained the free camping with hot showers. The pub is more modern but it just doesn’t have the character about it like the bottom pub.
The Commercial Hotel, Deepwater.
We then wondered over to Susies Diner and OMG I had no idea this cafe was here, you think there’s not much in a town until you really start to explore and find all these hidden treasures.
Just one of the trinkets that line the shelves at what looks like a Rock and Roll Cafe.
I found this guy walking down the street with his goat on a leash heading to the Pub and he aloud me to take a photo, now ya don’t see that everyday.
Travelling along the B76-Gwydir Hwy towards Inverell, I think Des is loosing the plot, he recons we haven’t been on this road before, but I know differently because I also remember the campground we’re heading to, The Swanbrook Rest Area where he even put some yabbie pots in on our first visit here, aww, it’s slowly coming back to him, old age is a prick. Once we camped up Des was quick to try for some yabbies but I’m thinking it’s a bit chilly. We meet an elderly couple who were camped in front of us so we stopped for a chat which rolled on until dark then home so Des can cook dinner. I’m loving my new 12v electric blanket so that’s the first thing to plug in as the temperature drops, there’s nothing better than hoping into a nice warm bed.
20240525 Des was up and made our cuppa, pulled his pot with no yabbies then cooked breakfast before saying our goodbyes and heading to Inverell. We just passed on the RHS heading towards Inverell an amazing campground overlooking the valley and not far from Swanbrook campground then another on the LHS, I must remember that if we ever pass this way again.
Ya gotta love the line of letter boxes on these outback roads.
We completed our shopping and I even managed to get a shampoo and blow dry for 50 bucks so we leave for Graman, crossing over the Macintyre River then right towards Yetman on Yetman Rd, this is all new said Des, are you sure about that I said.
Passing Hunts Gully Stewards Grain Feeding, who have been serving growers, end users, and exporters across the Eastern States of Australia for more than 20 years.
As we travel along these backroads there’s nothing but farmland as far as the eye can see with the occasional small towns along the way, Oakwood, Cherry Tree Hill and the only evidence are the town signs as we enter the town and a couple of farm homes on the edge of the road.
The Graman Hotel, different than the Longhorn in Deepwater and it does have reception, free camping and showers but the grounds a bit uneven so we opted to keep going.
The road is much smoother out here and so far we have only passed one car, no traffic, roundabouts and traffic lights at every intersection, I’m sure you could drive home tanked without any issues, I’m kidding. We turned off onto Wallandra-Coolatai Rd that had some rough patch as we pass the Glunie Range Aungus Stud, Springfield when we noticed drovers herding cattle along a bush track, that is definitely on my bucket list.
The Guest family have been breeding Angus Cattle for 66 years as of 2024 and were commercial breeders long before they established the stud.
