20240313 Qld The Sandy Creek Pub, Allan

20240313 We have no definite plans apart from being in Stanthorpe on Thursday so after checking Wiki Camp we decided to check out Allan, a small rural town in the Southern Downs Region in Queensland with a population of only 87, formerly known as Sandy Creek. On our arrival we parked in the free camp provided then walked the grounds and stepped into the pub for a beer before we continued our walk around the grounds. There are no houses in site just the Pub, the bush and wide open space.

Just 10km outside of Warwick on Sandy Creek Road at the start of the Sprint Route through to Leyburn stands the Sandy Creek Pub where Des trys to get a little grunt in his day.

The Sandy Creek Hotel, which has been open for over 120 years, is a famous watering hole, the hotel is best known for the prodigious amounts of alcohol served to the US soldiers during World War II, who had a camp in close proximity.

It was a wednesday when we arrived and after seeing the great reviews we decided to dine out, well! talk about disapointiing, we had the worst country pub meals in the 10 years we've been travelling. My only thought was, don't stop here mid week because you get the leftovers from the weekend, Very Disappointing.

The Blue-and-yellow macaws are common in South America, from Venezuela to Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia and Paraguay. One thing I can't stand are birds like this locked in a small cage, there should be a law against it.

Then there are these pair of Black Cockatoo also stuck in a small, I just cannot understand how caging a bird is even legal.

The Sandy Creek Pub are the host of the annual Pig Races which brings in crowds up to 2,000, it’s been a family affair as local residents dig deep to raise funds for the rescue helicopter service which has personally impacted many lives in the area. The races were the brainchild of the original pub owner, who wanted to give back to RACQ Life Flight Rescue after they heard the story of a young local resident who was airlifted by the service.

Alpaca's and sheep roam the grounds keeping the grass under control, at least they are free to roam.

Sandy Creek Raceway is home of the Warwick Kart Club and is located on Sandy Creek Rd, Allan, just 12km from Warwick. The venue has a minimum of one major event a month and hosts championships, carnivals, grade titles and professional touring events which has a reputation as one of the fastest tracks in Queensland.

20240314 After our discusting meal last night we were pretty pissed of so we hit the road early and left for Wallangarra, not a new camp for us until we drove a little further down the road into a mother town called Jennings. Named after the first Catholic Premier of NSW, Sir Patrick Jennings, the small village of Jennings is home to around 200 people and is situated right on the New South Wales/Queensland border.

Jennings Hotel would be the first hotel in NSW when driving south on the New England Highway but unfortunately, it's been closed for many a years now.

Jennings Rest Area is a spacious free camp for self-contained vehicles and caravans and we were lucky enough to camp next to the shelter with the added bonus of a BBQ so we stayed for a few days.

HAPPY DAYS
