20240311 Qld Thornlands to Freestone

20240311 It's that time of the year when we pack up the old Winnebago and set off towards the colder climate in search of that special camp site somewhere on a river with lots of wood so we can sit around a fire while listening to our music and downing a few ales, as we do. We left home just after 1pm and headed east towards the Great Dividing Range stopping at Aratula to stretch our legs when we noticed a car and camper van over the embankment, we were lost for words how they did this.

The mind boggles, and this is a rather straight road.

I’ve lost count how many times we have seen this familiar site as we climb The Great Dividing Grange and I still can’t find the name of this bloody Mountain.

We had to stop for roadworks as we climbed the Great Dividing Range, and I watched on as these wire nets are dropped from the top of the ridge, these roadworks are taking for ever, we passed them on our way home last year.

We arrived at the Maryvale Crown Hotel which Des recons was opened 7 days a week but just as I thought it was closed and just as well, at $7 a stubbie for a country pub, just a bit excessive. We parked across the road in our usual spot then settled in for an afternoon nannies nap. All refreshed we jump up and head to the esky for a nice cold beer. It started to sprinkle with rain so we sat under the awning at the pub and watched the dark clouds roll in over the mountains. Once the rain and wind settled down the stars began to fill the sky with the Milky Way, the stars inland are so much brighter and just lights up the sky. We had a pleasant night taking advantage of the hotels facilities while chatting away followed with a few laughs.

20240312 We woke to a lovely sunny morning but unfortunately Des discovered our house batteries are low so he phoned around trying to find an auto electrician in Warwick and after three attempts they were all booked out so we tried Stanthorpe and managed two book an appointment for Thursday morning.

Freestone has been permanently settled since 1862, when the establishment of Warwick Agricultural Reserve in 1861 allowed individuals to apply for land. Within a decade the district was well established with settlers from England, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Germany. The township grew and in its 1920s heyday boasted churches, store, post office, butchers, saddlers, blacksmith, sporting facilities, railway station and grain shed.

Des remembered a camp spot he noticed on their ride last weekend on the way to Freestone so we checked it out and decided to stay.

Freestone is located about 110km southwest of Brisbane on the Freestone Creek with a few scatted farm homes and the cattle grazing in the background. It never ceases to amaze me that every time we camp in these secluded spots, how you can always hear a dog in the background barking constantly.

We have a lovely fresh water creek to bath in if only we weren’t too old to climb down the embankment.

We spent the day lazing around reading or in my case blogging until happy hour so we settle in for a few beers and once again watched the stars cover the night sky when I saw this flash falling from the sky, it was like a ball of fire only bright white that disappeared over the hill not far from me, I’m sure Des thinks I’m talking shit.

Someone’s waiting for a beer ๐Ÿป๐Ÿบ

The windmill looks relatively new and pumps water from an underground well.
"GLOBAL WARMING"

A geometrical, abstract sculpture where two spherical shapes melt into two droplets.

A warning about what could happen if we have continuous contamination of the atmosphere.

Gee, when I saw it, I thought it looked like a large penis๐Ÿ˜
