20230512 SA Kangarilla (Eyre Flat), Macclesfield to Echunga
After passing Myponga we hit a detour sign that got us a bit lost and we ended up at an intersection with a park called Eyra Flat in Kangarilla where we came upon a gravel pit, we just love our free gravel pits so we settled in for the night. As usual we cracked a beer and I roamed the grounds, which wasn’t much but I did come upon a gas BBQ that was clean and worked, cool Des can cook breakfast in the morning.
We arrived into the town of Macclesfield, one of those small villages that began in 1840 due to a banker, George Davenport who was well aware of the opportunity in SA so in 1840, he purchased 4,416 acres with a proviso that 576 acres had to be set aside for a town Macclesfield.
We passed Echunga a small village not far from Mt Barker and it looks like the main building in the town is the Hagen Arms, named after the first European settler in the district, Jacob Hagen. Further along though you will find, The Jupiter Creek gold diggings were the first gold was discovered in South Australia.
20230512 Ooo, she was a bit chilly this morning in the van 9 degrees as we dragged ourselves out of bed and Des drove over the road and we cooked breakfast at the park before we packed up and head towards Mt Barker. Going through Kangarilla, Meadows and onto Macclesfield, walked the street then left for Echunga where I grabbed a fly by photo and kept going.
Now that we have never seen, three double yolks in one hit, yum 😋
Our romantic camp for the night, Des sure knows how to impress me.
The Main Street in Macclesfield
Established in 1841 by Mr S Jackson and originally called 'The Goats Head Inn', later 'The Macclesfield Arms', then 'The Davenport Arms', and now 'The Three Brothers Arms'.
Established in 1848 and the defining landmark in the Adelaide Hills town of Echunga.
The Hagen Arms is one of South Australia’s oldest Hotels, operating uninterrupted for 178 years.
Well it looks like the new Thermal Mix has the thumbs up when it comes to ice cream as the boys wait for their big brother to share it out, if there’s any left after Ash get into it.
The End
