20230507 SA Tailem Bend, Jervois to Milang
On the road again and just passed the town of Kiki heading to Tailiem Bend, waved to Yumaly and Cook’s Plains township as we passed, then noticed a hill host in the middle of the paddock with cloths pegged to it, ya see some strange things sometimes in your travels. Opps, we missed the turn off to the ferry over the Murray, turn around Des. Drove through Wellington on Lake Plains road and so far there’s nothing but, wait a minute there’s the ocean and long horn cows and I just passed Wolf Blass Winery, but more excited about the long horn cows.
It was in 2012 we first visited Milang and I must admit I really couldn’t remember it but Des remembers camping opposite the Caravan Park, a bit brave but we got away with it. There were many paddle steamers and barges built at Milang, the first being the P.S. Enterprise in 1857. Then in 1866 came the P.S. Telegraph which carried mail and coach passengers from Milang across the Lakes to Meningie, the P.S. Dispatch replaced the Telegraph in 1877.
The ferry leaves from Tailem Bend and it’s about a 5 minute trip across the Murry to Jervois and bugger me dead it’s free, probably about the only thing that’s free in this State.
Beston Global Food Company, $9.5 million Jervois dairy plant expansion has significantly increased their ability to produce lactoferrin – a glycoprotein derived from milk which is highly sought after in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products because of its anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-parasitic and anti-allergic properties.
Ooo dear, poor Des just washed his van and there’s mud and cow shit from the dairy cattle crossing back and forth all over the road, he’s not happy.
Aww, now it’s starting to come back to me, I remember these fishing huts.
Butter Factory
The Milang Lakeside Butter Factory was opened on July 3rd, 1893 and was an important part of the Milang & districts agricultural businesses into the 1960's although it has not always been smooth sailing.
We found a cafe with $15 roast but unfortunately the veggies were frozen and tasted like shit so I wrapped up my chicken for Des’s dinner tonight.
And once again we find a gravel pit on the side of the road about 4ks from Goolwa, there’s no free camping here.
