20230413 Vic Swan Hill to Nullawil

20230413 Next stop Swan Hill, trying to find a bloody parking spot in these towns is a nightmare, they are all angle parking, down the back of the town we parked and walked the town where we finally picked up a cheep chair to get us out of trouble.

They say its mouth is big enough to swallow a car in a single gulp, it’s 11m long and 6m wide and its eyes are like beach balls. The giant Murray cod was actually built as a prop for a movie called “Eight Bills”. The film was not exactly a Hollywood blockbuster but the locals loved it so much they found a home for it.

We found a camp at the St Josephs church in Nullawil where there’s a new silo art, bonus, once again we pass hundreds of acres of harvested crops but Des is more concerned about this semi up our arse so once we hit a big straight Des signals him to pass using his blinkers and he returns a thank you using his indicators.

Ya gotta love these views while driving along, it so much nicer that living in the city’s.

Look out Des, wide load coming through.

Nullawil, gee what can I say, there’s sure nothing here, it just goes to show how the silos bring people back to a dying town and trust me the town of Nullawil is struggling, but some of the locals are fighting to get the town back on track. It is thought that the name was derived from Aboriginal words describing a stick used to kill birds. Nullawil had a population of 92 in 2021.

The Nullawil Silos in the Wimmera-Mallee region of Victoria was painted by Smug in July 2019. Featured Jimmy the kelpie dog who is still a resident of the town.

Jimmy, Nullawil’s friendly dog likes to sit on this made up silo imitation for travellers to take his photo.

When in town be sure to take a walk just down the side street to check out Trickbots Metal Art and have a coffee while there, it’s definitely worth a look and if you like any of the art you can you can buy a piece for home.

Between 1905 and 1912 Nullawil gained a general store but I assure you it doesn’t look like this now, the owners have just walked out leaving everything behind, they even left the dishes in the sink. The locals are onto the government to have it demolished as it’s becoming a hazard and the town would dearly like a new complex and are hopeful the government can step in and help them achieve there goal, there are no general store in this town now.

But there’s more than just the silo to bring this town back to life as just a minute from the silo, down Baxter street and turn left you can take a walk through Trickbots garden gallery by Dan who moved to Nullawil in November 2021. Dan has many plans for his garden gallery in the hope to bring more tourist to the town.

His art certainly brings his garden alive.

I especially liked this piece of bumblebee from transformers,
Bumblebee is one of Optimus Prime’s most trusted lieutenants. Although he's not the strongest or most powerful of the Autobots, Bumblebee more than makes up for this with a bottomless well of luck, determination and bravery.

The boots make for a nice finish on what I think could be a spider.

Dinosaurs created from old car bits, really cool.

Simple but effective.
The Catholic Church in Nullawil, it certainly doesn’t look like this any more it’s decaying rapidly, we walked inside and god hasn’t been kind to this church, it leaning towards hell, but its a good spot to camp the night and there’s toilets out the back. Up the road are showers only some lousy people keep stealing the shower-head, what the hell.
