20210711 Qld Mt Walker to Hughenden

20210711 Wendy meets us at the top of Mount Walker but not before our mishap when a carton of my wine jumped off the bed and smashed sending a river of wine flowing down the steps, pull over Des as I scurry for some towels, it could have been worse, at least only two smashed. A note to one's self drive slow along a bumpy road or better still don't put wine on the bed while ravelling.

Wendy snaps a pic of us struggling up the steep hill to Mount Walker, just because she's has a fore wheel drive.😝

This road has a 16% incline and is not recommended for large Motorhomes but Des put's her in first and we slowly chug up the hill.

Mount Walker is around 10km from Hughenden and has six lookouts scanning the district over 360 degree's and stand 478m above sea level. Named by William Landsborough in 1862 after fellow explorer Frederick Walker, it has today become a popular place at sunset and is a photographer’s delight.
It cost me two bottles of wine for this view.

Now for the slow decent.

Take a left Des.

Hughenden appeal is based on its position on the edge of Australia's ancient inland sea which existed between 95 and 120 million years ago leaving behind a rich supply of fossils through out the area.  Best known as the "Dinosaur Country" and is home to the famous Muttaburrasaurus which is displayed in the Flinders Discovery Centre and the first entire fossil to be found in Australia.

Muttaburrasaurus was about 8 metres (26 ft) and weighed around 2.8 metric tons.

Just out of town and up from the Ernest Henry Bridge overlooking the Flinders River, this Comet Windmill is one of only 15, 35 foot mills manufactured, it seem to me every town has one out here.

While in town don't forget to check out the "FJ Holden Cafe" and view the large collection of Elvis and FJ Holden memorabilia.

The interior of the cafe.

Displayed on the wall of the cafe, in the form of a photo, of cause, I'm thinking maybe an Indian.

Here's one for you Les Cazneau, a well restored Shell fuel pump.

The two 20ft (6m) diameter windmills pumped water at the Bogunda Station for over 45 years before being donated to the town as part of the 2001 Centenary of Federation Celebration.

Poole Bros General Store 1939 and she's still standing.

Recreational Lake at sunset, constructed in 2019 as a recreation reserve for the locals.

This mural depicts a small boy at play with his toy dinosaur and was completed in just 5 days in late June 2021.
