20200728 Qld Chinchilla to Jandowae

20200728 Stopping at Miles for lunch and all we could find was a dirty old pie shop, arr well, a pie it is so we stuffed our face then headed to Chinchilla to camp once again at Round Water Hole Rest Area.  I was so blotted all I wanted to do was take a nanny nap and sleep the afternoon away and that's just what I did. I awoke feeling refreshed so we grabbed a drink and headed out for an afternoon walk, something I haven't been doing much of.

Today is my one of my best friends birthday so this is a toast to Shirl, we have been friends since we were 16 and have shared many great memories, Happy Birthday Shirl and here's to many more. 💜💚😘

We meet Mick and Sylvia when he was collecting wood for a small fire, you're welcome to join us if you like, but it's BYO wood, so off we go in search of wood. This was there first time on the road and get this, it's the first fire they have sat around and enjoyed since, well they can't remember, that's how long it's been. As usual I take control of the fire keeping it stock and Mick was more than happy for me to take over.  Once again we had a great night telling many tails of all our travels.
Thanks Guys for a Great Night
29-07-2020 We wake to a drizzling morning and Des is not happy, only because he has just washed his van, but that's life. We pack up and say our goodbyes to Mick and Sylvia before heading to Chinchilla stopping at Miles for lunch and all we could find was a dirty old pie shop but at least they are freshly made daily and it actually didn't taste to bad.

A new place and a new town, Jandowae derives from a Barrunggam word meaning 'waterhole',
it was first used by Europeans in a petition to the Secretary of Lands in 1862. It is said that, later, a man named John Dowaie established a rest area for travellers called John Dowaie Camp. This possibly explains the spelling, 'Jondowaie', used by early settlers. When the railway reached the town in 1914 the current spelling was adopted to avoid confusion with Jondaryan.

Arriving in the little town of Jandowae

We camped at the showgrounds  at the end of town then after setting up walked to town to check out the pubs for meals and take in the sites.

Built in 1934 replacing the original which had burn't down.

The Jandowae Hotel is surrounded with history with murals painted on her walls depicting times gone by.

Jandowae has many murals scattered throughout the town but unfortunately the town is slowly dying with many shops closed down.

This mural caught my attention and yes, it is a Laundromat.

For a little town it sure has a lot to boast about with three beautiful old Hotels lining the streets and The Exchange Hotel in one that is still operating.

Mulholland’s Hotel – Club Hotel – The Pink Pub
Built in 1912 it was the first pub in Jandowae and the original building still stands today only it was painted pink in around 1997 by the then publican to make it stand out from the rival middle pub, The Exchange and the bottom pub, The Jandowae, but today it is a private residence only.

An old photo of the Club Hotel in all it's glory and made entirely of hardwood.

Dingo Sculpture- this monument marks the start of the 5,400km Dingo Barrier Fence, the longest fence in the world.

Numbers on the clock face are replaced by the words "Lest we forget".

Graeme McCullough is an artiest from Dalby who painted Jandowae sign post to brighten up the town and to offer a talking point at the Timbertown festival.

After out town walk we head home and found this old crane standing alone near an unused railway line but it does say it can lift up to 10 tonne.

Today is my 2nd grandsons, Liam Kruger's 20th Birthday, have a wonderful day my sweet boy.
LOVE GRANDMA

Well I must say this has been an exceptional trip, we laughed, we drank heaps, meet new friends and caught up with old friends, had some great fires and many yummy camp meals and probably put on weight so it time to head home, hopefully get a bit fit and take up some of my grandma duties, as my daughter says.
