20191916 Qld Roma to Goombungee

20191916 The vans not going into gear as it should so we spent the afternoon at Isuzu, a few hours later the report was, there electrician was out on a job and the reset button isn’t working so they could couldn’t find the problem, but he thinks it the solenoid and Toowoomba is the only one with spares. It could be ok to keep going, but depending on where we are, if we break down it could cost a small fortune in towing.

From the 1840s Roma has been seen as the land of plenty, rich in sheep and cattle grazing area, today, calling itself the Capital of the Western Downs. Roma takes much pride in the fact that it was the first place in the Surat Basin to discover gas and oil. At the time when it was surveyed there was nothing more than three pubs, it was named Roma after Lady Roma Bowen, the wife of the Queensland Governor at the time, but for years locals continued to call the settlement either, The Bungil or Reid’s Crossing.

The Southern Cross Windmill, was built in 1950, it has blades 9 metres across and it stands 15 metres high. it was the largest commercially made windmill Australia.

There are 93 bottle trees along Wyndham Street dedicated to each person from Roma district who died during WW1. In 1918 the first tree was planted in honour to Lieutenant Corporal Norman Saunders who was killed in France in 1916, it is now known as the tree of knowledge.
Then in 1918 the people of Roma gathered to pay tribute to their sons who fell in WW1 and pledged that , their lives would live on, as long as Roma existed they would never be forgotten, these plaque's sit under each bottle tree in remembrance.

Roma’s largest bottle tree has the girth of 9.51 metres, a height of six metres and a crown of 20 metres, it was transplanted by Roma Town Council to its present location from a local property in 1927. The tree was fairly well grown at the time of the transplant and quite possibly originated in the nineteenth century.
Roma Saleyards are the largest cattle selling facility in the southern hemisphere processing over 400,000 cattle a year.
Like most old towns that were once surrounded by many pubs, Roma is no different as I gaze upon this abandon hotel and wondering, how grand she once was.
I would love to venture through this grand old Queensland that I’m sure was once very elaborate in her day.

17-08-2019 We stayed at the rifle rang not far from town, we had every intention’s of continuing our trip but then Des decided to head back to Toowoomba to get the van repaired. I found a new camp spot inland from Oakey that looks interesting so looks like we’re staying in Goombungee only 35ks from Toowoomba, perfect. We camped at the showgrounds with power and showers and decided to stay a few days as the van was booked into Isuzu on Tuesday so to fill in time we walked to town to take in the sites.

We passed the tiny town of Dulacca originally spelt 'Doolackah', the name was derived from an Aboriginal name meaning 'emu tracks'. I managed a fly by photo of  the lovely pink historical Dulacca Hotel which was built in 1908. It was known as the Waterhole on the hill and has since been re-furbished.
The name was derived from the Goombungee pastoral run, taken up by Charles Pitts in 1847.
I told Des to do something different and this is the best he could come up with, but at least he did it, we all know who much he loves me taking his photo, Not!
The town has a few interesting old shops like this one with its many antique and great coffee.
Then there's this convenient store that has a bit of everything and even serves a good meal.
The show grounds was hosting a pony wagon equestrian and this poor little fellow had to pull these fat pair around but it was certainly different.
This couple had two of these horses and I just had to ask what they were, the Haflinger Horse also known as the Avelignese, is a breed of horse developed in Austria and northern Italy during the late nineteenth century and they have such a lovely face.
20-08-2019 We had a nice but quite stay in Goombungee as we pack up to head to Toowoomba to hopefully get the van fixed.
