20190416 NSW Mendooran

20190416  As usual we're the last to leave the camp ground after pondering over which way to head, not taking the motorhome on dirt road certainly limits where we can go, then we found the town of Mendooran and it has a free camp ground, that sounds like us.  With not many here we had the choice where to park so we found a nice grassy area and settled in for a few days, well it's that time of  day as I pop the top of a coldie, "the best sound in the world" as Scotty would say.

Built in 1926 the Mendooran Hotel is one of those grand old pubs with it's large veranda and grand fire places that takes you back in time.  Situated on a three way intersection leading to Dubbo, Gilgandra and
Dunedoo this pub is a must to stop at. I take my hat off to the new owners, very friendly, great story teller and fabulous meals at very reasonably prises, well it must be, Des and I had three meals there and they were all yummy.

Come along and join in the Fun Times at the Pub.

17-04-2019 Even though there's nothing to do in these towns we always manage to keep busy as we walk the streets taking in the history that surrounds this once booming town.

The bridge across the Castlereagh River was completed in 1869 and it opened the way to many towns.
The town is made up of many murals created by Karin Duce reflecting country life, Mendooran's history and rural life.
The history is very much depicted in this murals.

The streets are deserted apart from the occasional car travelling through and only a general store still operating but is also slowly dying.

20-04-2019 It just blows my mind the amount of vans that pull in every day only to pack up and hit the road the next day, there are certainly many grey nomads spending there children's inheritance. The weather has been hot through the day just so I sit in the sun and read my new book but in the evening it cools down for a pleasant sleep at night.

We meet this lovely guy while walking the streets when he yelled out to us to come and have a cuppa, himself and his wife are volunteers for the road side 'Driver Reviver' we enjoyed a cuppa along with some very nice cakes and a chat, come back tomorrow he said.

This seed comes from a tree of the Lone Pine at Gallipoli & these crosses are in memory of those men from Mendooran who died serving our country in WW1
A pretty candle to light our way and the funny thing was Des and I kept walking over to it thinking it was a fire, cheers๐Ÿน๐Ÿท
22-04-2019 Our time at Mendooran has come to an end but we've had a week of strolling the streets, getting to know some of the locals, enjoying yummy meals at the local hotel, read my book, drank to much as we do and enjoyed the surroundings while relaxing, this is a great town to stay.

Before going to dinner for a $10 chicken Schnitzel at the pub we stop by Deb and John's van for a few drinks and a chat, returning after dinner for a couple more but as Des has to drive we had an early night.

Before leaving we say our goodbyes to Deb and John and don't forget you promised us a corned meat cooked over the fire next time we meet.
Deb sneaks a last pic of us as we  take our leave for a new adventure, see ya soon guys.๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ‘‹
