20190403 NSW Grenfell

20190403 Emu Creek, is the birth place of Henry Lawson whose father, Neil Larson, came to Australia as a quartermaster in 1855, married in 1866, and attracted by the gold rush moved to Emu Creek, as Grenfell was once known. Henry Lawson was born in a tent on the goldfields during a severe storm in 1867, his birth prompted the family name change to Lawson an anglicised version of Larson. Due to the gold rush about 10,000 people headed to Emu Creek but due to the lack of water and health care many died, prompting the fast-growing businesses in George Street where shopkeepers served the needs of the gold mining industry and Emu Creek was proclaimed Grenfell.

Grenfell is now the proud owner of the silo rural art movement, artist, Heesco Khosnaran transformed the enormous silo into a remarkable mural featuring lush green grass, grazing sheep and local birds.

Love, Love, Love the silos art murals.

Around 500 cans of spray-paint, five weeks and 130 litres of acrylic paint went into the transformation of the silo.

Grenfell take pride in honouring one of Australia's greatest poet & fiction writers of all time, press the button to lister to his poems or have a photo taken with Mr Lawson who apparently was a bit of a piss head

The Monument stands as a reminder of the home where Henry Lawson was born in a hut, some of my people said it was a tent with a good frame- for father was a carpenter.

This piece of history was built by the guy's in there Men's Shed depicting the tools use on the gold fields.

Des so hate's having his picture taken but to keep the peace he reluctantly doe's as I tell him.

01-05-2019 We were told there's about 50mls of rain heading our way so we need to find some solid high ground to camp up until it clears so we left Grenfell heading to Wyalong, then Des changed his mind, as he doe's, so we turned around and headed back to Grenfell where we can camp at the Historic Railway, and on bitumen.

The Albert Hotel 1866 and they have great pub meals.

OLD FELLOWS HALL 1878
Down the back streets of Grenfell is the historic, George St and the original business centre from 1866, only the road was narrow and crooked so the government, in there wisdom, determined the street not suffice as a main street for a busy town so they went ahead and surveyed Main Street. It was only after a huge fire burnt down many business that the town after about 30 years started to move to Main Street.

You see some different things when walking the back streets and this toilet block caught my eye.

The railway only went to Murrumburrah and Cob & Co meet the train three times a week to carry passengers and mail to Grenfell but due to the slowness of the service a petition was drawn up in 1887 but was rejected until in 1896 it was approved.

I could live in there it's really quite cute.

03-05-2019 We arrived in Grenfell on Tuesday the 30th and today is Thursday and still no rain and the poor farmers have been working around the clock getting there land ploughed and seeds dropped in the hope of rain, it's so dry out here, I don't pray much but I'm certainly praying for the rain to come soon.

Alexandrine Parakeet
His name is Black Beard and he's over 20 years old and he's just beautiful.  He belongs to Ray and Ann who are on there way home to Bundie and also enjoy a few afternoon drinks, well we have to find something to fill our days.
Des puts a chip in his mouth and Blackbeard takes it out.
Blackbeard loves his shower but he also enjoys a nice cold beer.
Our new neighbour, Ray and his wife Ann camped beside us and joined us in a few drinks and a good laugh. Talk about characters, Ann was always saying, O Ray get off that phone or if he's not on his phone he's moving the van from one spot to the next or cleaning it and I thought Des was bad, but we had a lot of laughs.

This was my favourite, 1930 Dodge DC8, 8-cylinder, 3 speed (non-synchro) and 4 wheel hydraulic and she was just immaculate.
But this Dodge was Desie's favourites and the guy paid $60,000 but it's apparently worth over $100,000 with only 6000 kilometres on it.

Someone gave this Blue Bird replica to the museum, the owner of the car was, Major Sir Malcolm Campbell was a British racing motorist who gained the world speed not just on land but also on water during the 1920s and 1930s.

04-05-2019 Waking to a bloody cold morning but with the sun shining I gaze out my window to see due over Ray's van as I say to Des, I wonder if Ray's going to chammy his car and van before he leaves as we both chuckle to ourselves.

I's always fun meeting great travellers but sad to say goodbye, even if they are cheeky.
