20160320 Tas Ross
20160320 Ross, another grand old
town in Tassie and I must say they certainly know how to preserve their
heritage. We have just arrived and
already I am overwhelmed by how beautiful the town of
Driving through
the streets with its grand old stone buildings lined with lovely elm Trees
gives you a cozy, warm feeling.
Come on people bring your head in, and have a
photo taken to be part of this year’s Deer Comp. You can get one of the staff members from the
hotel to come and take the picture elsewhere if you can’t get it to the pub but
you must bring the head to the prise draw to be scored, $20 per entrant
includes full colour pic of head for yourself.
So have a go and maybe get that head mounted for free, wow! Now that’s different.
Dominating the end of the street is this
Anzac memorial.
In 1836 Ross built the impressive
sandstone bridge to replace the old log laid structure and is now one of the
historical features in Ross.
The Ross Female Factory Site, built
in early 1840’s, incarcerated female convicts from 1847 to 1853, it was one of 4 female factories established in Tasmania. The name” Female Factory” was abbreviated
from the British institutional title “Manufactory” and referred to the prisons’
role as a Workhouse. Female felons served
time behind the high security fence until its closure in 1855.
Not a bad view for a convict last resting place.
The convict certainly did it
hard in those days, can you imagine the intense labour they would have endured.
Yes another church but check out the inside and that stained glass window, just beautiful.
The old phone booths always
take me back to my child hood.
