20160221 Tas Kempton to Mountain River

20160221  Kempton has a free camp with power and as our sola is low because there’s no bloody sun that was to be our next stop.  Kempton, originally called Green Pond was established as military station in 1828.  The streetscape, with its inn, church and shops is apparently very much like it was in the 19th century.  The town was named Kempton after Anthony Kemp who brought the first land grant.

This model of times gone by stands at the entrance of the town.
Powers on, now to walk the town and this impressive arch is the war memorial of Kempton, behind it is part of the old probation station which it’s most famous prisoners were a group of Canadians who revolted in favour of joining the United States of America in 1840.
St Peter’s Catholic Church was built in 1886, today it is being turned into a luxury residence.
Look! said Des, this is the first Church of England I’ve seen, and your point is, I said, well, I’m Church of England, OoK.  It was built in 1839 and there is a large cemetery at the back of the church with many historic graves.
The once tomb is now caved in, well! they do say ghost lurk here, creepy.
Wilmot Arms Inn was built in 1844, and now offers colonial style accommodation.
Kent Cottage was built about 1843 and was once the longest running shop in Kempton.

Kempton really takes you back in time, this lovely town has certainly held on to it's history and it is prove in the historical buildings spread through out the town, lovely to see in a population of only 358 residents.

29-02-2016 With our batteries all charged up its time to move on from this grand old town, Kempton, as we head towards Huonville we cross over the grand old lift bridge.

The Bridgewater Bridge and Causeway spans the Derwent River and it consists of a lift bridge.

The rustic old apple shed just before  Huonville. Built in 1942 it carries a range of delicious cider.

Who remembers the labels that were stuck on the old wooden packing boxes.

We restocked in Huonville then headed back to a sign we saw for Mountain River hoping to find a creek to camp on, we found a creek but not to camp on so we stayed at the Memorial Hall and had a fun night.

01-03-2016  Mountain River is a lovely little town nestled in the Huon Valley but unfortunately our travels came to an end as it ran into a dirt road, bugger.

Ye!Ha! finally the sun is shining Des and the wind has finally dropped.

Happy, Happy, Happy
