Tallangatta: The Town That Moved
Back in the 1950’s when the government expanded the Hume Weir, they suddenly realised along with Jindabyne, old Tallangatta was destined to be plunged underwater so houses were put on trucks and off the town went, up the hill. Every now a then, when the Hume Dam is at a low, you can still see the ghostly remains of the old Tallangatta.

The towns buildings had to be carefully negotiated across narrow bridges for the move from the old town to the new sites.
The new town after it was relocated to a new main street in 1956
The monument in Corryong relates to the ride that made a legend of Jack Riley in the 1880's. Riley joined a party of stockmen out to capture an escaped thoroughbred stallion, and it was only Jack Riley who had the courage to follow the stallion in it's mad plunge down the scrubby slops.
Jack Riley is the legendary horseman in the middle.
We drove through to Benalla looking for the Casey Weir Rest Area and were bitterly disappointed after leaving Tumbarumba, the weir is much polluted and Des wanted to get water out of the dirty old creek to wash up in, “I don’t think so”.
We parked under a bit of shade but the van was still in the sun trying to avoid the dead branches but as we were in a gully it was bloody hot so Des moved the van into full shade.
10-02-2016 Well! another night of drinking too much but at least we slept well and decided to head closer to Melbourne stopping to check out Benalla first when we spotted Vans parked down the back of the town with a nice breeze and lovely green grass along a very clean creek, typical.

Benalla highlight is ‘The Ned Kelly Saga’ which includes the sash Ned wore at the Glenrowan siege; an authentic replica of Joe Bryan’s armour; the Witness box from Benalla Courthouse and the portable lock-up where Ned was held.
We were told the Kilmore Racecourse put on a great lunch and it was yummy. We had a great catch up talking about both of our many travels and swiping camp spots.
Dawn got these pair going as I set up a tiny tripod that wouldn't hold my camera and I missed her in the act of clowning around , bugger.
Love the photos-hope you don't get too cold in Tassie!
