20151015 SA Weeroona Island to Port Hughes
20151015 A couple who told us about Weeroona Island just off from Port
Germein so let’s check it out, Yep to me it was just an Island but to the
locals it was much more when a terrazzo floor, a winding dirt track and a
rock-pool swimming pond had been discovered – all linked to the one-time Weeroona
Holiday Camp, which apparently to the locals is a grand find.
Although it is lovely and if there would have been a jetty we may
have stayed but Des was hanging out to go crabbing so after we lunched on the
Island we left.
Stopping at Wallaroo and this grand old Chambers Hall was the town’s
main attraction, but it also had a great little 2nd hand shop which
I gladly browsed through and brought a small item, but it’s a secret.

Tipara Reef lighthouse was completed in 1877 and was erected on screwpiles
driven three metres into the reef. The Lighthouse
stood over 30 metres above sea level with two decks. The main deck contained a watch room, keeper’s
quarters, kitchen, workshops and water tanks.
In 1920 the old lighthouse was replaced by an automatic light and this
is what remains of her.
This would be Port Hughes and this is where we slept the night and
on the LHS driving down the hill would be a caravan park which Des snuck into
for a shower, well! they wanted $10 for a shower, who would pay that.
We have seen these signs everywhere, whatever do they mean and there was also a sign on the jetty saying no alcohol aloud on the Jetty after 9pm, kill joys.
While Des had a shower I sat in the car park with a chappie travelling through and got merrily happy.
Hughes Enginehouse 1865
It was in the 19th century when two shepherds stumbled across green rocks, heralding what would become a great mining dynasty on the Yorke Peninsula and she still stands today as a big part of the towns history.

Des was up early to try catching some crabs and
returned a very happy fella.
