20151005 SA Penong to S.A Boarder
20151005 If waking to roaring winds wasn’t bad enough
then I looked out the window and noticed a dust storm heading our way, shit,
bugger, bum, now we have to leave this awesome location.
Our camp spot on the
Bight and I so wanted to say another day.
Treeless plain alright, not a tree in sight.
The Dingo or Dog
fence is a pest-exclusion fence built in Australia during the 1880s and
finished in 1885 to protect the sheep flock of southern Queensland. It is one of the longest structures in the
world and is the world’s longest fence, stretching 5,614 kilometres from
Jimbour on the Darling Downs near Dalby through thousands of mile of arid land
ending west of Eyre Peninsula on the cliffs of the Nullarbor Plains.
A church, General Store, a Hotel and let’s
not forget the police station and you have a small town on the edge of South
Australia’s grain belt called Penong.
Although Penong is rich in history it has
little to offer but you can get a great pie or sausage roll followed by a hot cappuccino
to see you on your way.
Penong Hotel may look quite and lonely but
make no mistake these little country hotel’s go off.
Our first sighting of Ceduna as we approach the
South Australia boarder.
As you pass over into S.A be sure to stop at the Big Oyster and seat on the roof to take in the view and enjoy a feed of fresh oysters, if you’re into oysters.
Toll trucks lined up at the truck stop.
