20150624 WA Port Hedland

20150624  Be on our guard when visiting Port Hedland we were told after a cat fight broke out between the locals in front of Woollies, and the police had a battle on their hands trying to control it but with the help of the Elders and a big bus all ended but the event left a bad taste in some of the residents mouth.  Well looks like we have no choose but to stay at Black Rock Caravan Park.

Pretty Pool which is mostly use to exercise race horses but if yo'er looking for a more alluring site theirs a nudist beach on East Pretty Pool.

Esplanade Hotel
Built in 1904 at the cost of £5000 and it was the most prestigious of Port Hedland's three hotels.  On the veranda there was a barbers chair were the men would get there hair cut on Sunday as there was no Barber shop in town.

The jetty on the port where you can reach the jetty at any level of the tide.

Leaving Port Hedland and the salt lakes manopolise a huge part of the industry producing 3.2 million tonnes of salt per year.

This F7A Locomotive was used in the building of the Mt Newman to Port Hedland railway.  On the 8th May the world track laying record was broken, in less than 12 hours 7.25 kilometres was laid, spiked and anchored.

The road trains travel from Newman to Port Hedland  and I swear there is one leaving every 5 minutes.

Our camp for the night just off the main road and we're the only one's stupid enough to stay.  We set up the iPod, gathered some wood and watched the road trains go back and forth, we even managed a little boogie now and then to keep the truckies amused.  After a few drinks we slept very well not even hearing trucks.

26-06-2015 We are trying preventative maintenance on the truck so Des cleaned the fuel pump before heading off to a Rest Area which we were told is a great stop for a few days.

The Albert Tognolini Rest Area
This is a great rest spot over looking a gouge and off the road enough to muffle the trucks passing through.

We walked the grounds where many wild flowers are starting to bloom and they are so pretty, I would love to see it in the spring.

The Great Northern Highway
This is where Des did his best work pissed or sleeping on the job while driving a roller, they us to throw rocks at him to wake him up.  He was proud to tell me he worked on the project from Newman to Port Hedland in 1988 when he first traveled  around Australia.  The project was completed and opened on December 16, 1989.

28-06-2015  As much as I love these camp areas it's the not having reception that can become a pain, especially if your waiting for a call from friends in Dampier so when Des asked what do you want to do I was keen to move on.
