20150613 WA Broom Fishing
20150613 After a great week of touring Broome Karen and Crosy decided we needed a real experience so they took us on a fishing expedition to crab creek to try out our luck. As Killer Craber Cathcart and I aren’t what you would call fishermen our expectation for catching any fish was slim, but just being on the water is enough for me.
Karen and Cros passion is there fishing, even her mother asked if she could have a photo of just them minus the fish, their dedication shows in the award they both have mounted on their wall. One of Karen’s dreams before they leave Broome is to catch a record 10.1 Mulloway for a female.
Des and I jumped on the boat while Crosy parks the car and Karen is left holding the boat, poor Karen gets wet up to her waist, hence why she told Des to get in the boat, it would have been over his head.
Crab Creek, here we come, and these pair have all the gear, I think they mean business Des.
Once we arrived at our destination the deck hand get ready to drop the Anchor.
Crosy call to the fish, “YEP” he has all these whistle that make different sounds and every now and then out they would come and Des and I would crack up laughing, that sound more like a Duck call than a fish call but what would I know.
Bugger me dead it’s only just after 10 and Crosy caught the first fish, a Blue Nose Salmon, gee maybe there is something in his whistles after all.
Here we all were waiting for that bite when Des snags one and on Karen’s advice he lets it run a bit then starts to reel it in, Don’t listen to Karen said Crosy.
She’s in the net and Des is as proud as punch, another Blue Nose Salmon.

Karen shows him how to hold it and again Crosy say’s, don’t listen to Karen and we all laughed.

Full of pride Des holds up his catch, show off.

She’s swallowed the hook so out comes the tools and the experienced ones go to work while Des looks on.
We’re fishing on the outgoing tide so we need to keep on moving and the deck hand awaits the skippers command to drop the anchor.
I don’t believe this guy, check out the smug look on his face, I that’s because someone left his teeth at home.
These boys are pulling them in now, I think Des might have the hang of this.

It's a Queenfish, lovely if you eat straight away but not good to freeze. The boys are pulling them in now, smarty pants.
Yaa! The first one for the girls and she’s a beauty, and I might add, the biggest so far. Des watched on as Karen and Cros jumped up and down with excitement and I had a grin on my face as big a cheshire cat.
Karen pulls out the size mat and she’s just under a metre, then Crosy finds his scales and she's weighed in at 5.5 kilo’s, so as you will notice I am really milking this one for all I can.
Karen’s turn now, bugger shes was a bit small so back she go'es.
Look out of my way, pull in your line Des says Karen {but don’t listen to Karen}. It took me some time and between Karen and Cros there tossing up what it is, it could be a redfin say’s one or it could be a shark say’s the other while I’m ducking here and there trying to get it to the boat. A bloody shark after all of that and lucky for us it jumped of just as I got it to the boat.
Karen’s fishing techniques are very different from most fishermens, she actually talks dirty to the fish, come on suck it in or, get it in ya, check it out she’s into it, you go girl.

It’s not funny Karen, Sharks are not on our menu.
Now kiss it and release him.
The pearling ship is moored up due to one of the crew lost his leg and is now it under investigation.
One more stop before we head home so the captain heads to our next spot, all eyes ahead.

The crew relax while the captain steers us closer to our new location. We use hand lines at the next location so Des brings out his gloves to show Karen, ye they will do fine, but don’t listen to Karen.

A Barracuda, shit fish so back it goes.
Check out these pair they are in their element but I can understand how you could get drawn in to this, the fishing is just too good.
Back on land and Karen runs for the car while the boys, do nothing basically.
Well it looks like these pair had a great day, Yaa! we nailed it Des, a great day.
Here’s to a successful day fishing in Broome with the Crosby's and Des.
And this would be our catch, not bad for a day’s fishing, especially that big one on top, he!he.
Now come on take it on board you would be proud to, it’s not every day you have a catch like this and I’m told that some people have been in broom for years and have never caught a metrey.
One more before Cros guts them, fish on the barbie for dinner and Karen bags some for Des and I to take with us, Yummy.
Look what I found Crosy you left them on the kitchen sink, silly boy.
What better way to end the day than with a coldie, topped off with some Blue Nose Salmon and Queenfish and a yummy salad thrown together by Karen.
Here’s to a great day fishing in Broome with good friends and we still have Sunday to go yet.
14-06-2015 We wake to another sunny day in down town Broome so we're up early to prepare for another adventure with the Crosby's on the "SS Fish Guts".
Cros take us for a bit of a tour up Crab Creek, and in the wet season the water is much higher as shown by the white mark on the mangrove’s. This is not a place to swim many crocks feed in this area.
Check out these Pelicans marching in line with a few lagers left behind and there is certainly no shortage of food as we spotted many schools of bait fish.
This is what are called Mudskippers, and there are heaps of them on the mud flats at Crab Creek. They are completely amphibious fish and are able to breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouths, and propel themselves along using their fins. I just found them fascinating, maybe I should be the next David Attenborough.

The competitive one is our Karen and the first one of day for the girls, it’s all to do with how you hold your mouth.

Karen and I are both on and we pull in these Javelinfish, looks like the girls have it in the bag today.

We arrived home earlier so after we finish all our chores we all grab our drinks and head to Cable Beach. As you drive onto the beach the 4 wheel drives line the fore shores all with the same notion, a wine a beer and the sun set.

With the sun now down everyone leaves the beach as tho in formation, it is quite a site.
Crosy with his zippy fly squatter, he’s such a dag.
15-06-2015 Our last day in Broom and I prepare the van for our next adventure, cleaning, washing and cooking not what I would call much fun but it has to be done. Once Karen and Cros arrived home we sat outside and had a few drinks while discussing the different sites to visit on our next adventure.
Karen and Cros also given Des one of Crosy’s Mud Crab Claws mounted on a wood carving only his had the blue claws.
While chatting away Cros hands me a package and when opened it was a blown up picture of me with the Threadfin I had caught, I was so stunned it brought tears to my eyes.
We were woken in the early hours of the morning by one of the locals yelling near our van, ha cuntie wo, were are you cuntie wo, as he walks the street with his water bottle, NOT. Des and I we were up and peeking through the window, where did he come from said Des, it’s like they drop out of the sky. Well at least our last night ended with a bit of excitement to remind us of Broome and we all had a good laugh.
I couldn’t leave without taking some photos of Crosy’s wood carvings, they are truly remarkable he is such a talented craftsmen. Our Karen even has a bit of a flare for art and it shows in her home which are decorated with many memorabilia.
I so want one this is one of many of Crosy's amazing wood works.
Can you see what it is, two Threadfin Salmon, how cool is that.
This is one of many carved fish covering the walls. Cros and Karen are in the local fishing club and he makes all of their trophies.
A road train, I'm sure most truckies would love one of these and it's so well done.
Des and I will never forget our time in Broom which was made even more special thanks to our dear friends Karen and Crosy, we will hang our gifts with pride and wonderful memories.
