20120611 QLD Sarina, Mackay,Eaton to Eungella
20120611 Stopped at Sarina then drove onto Campuin Beach for lunch, Sarina is a perfect case of one of those undeveloped towns very much driven by the sugar industry which created it. The attraction in the town is the alcohol distillery at the local sugar mill – and this is industrial alcohol, not the sort of stuff which can be imbibed at the local pub.
It seems The Big Toad is not quite pulling in the crowd the town planners originally hoped, known as Buffy (short for her scientific name bufo marinus) that squats proudly between parked cars in the center of the main street, seems to be the exception that proves the rule ‘if you build it, they will come’.
Eton looking for the General Gordon Hotel, another pub Des visited in 1990 when he was working on the cane. There it is surrounded by cane fields, gee this pub looks quite run down, we pulled in and parked up with many other vans out the back of the Hotel $10 for the night but for some r eason the publican only charged Des $5 and thats with showers. Once we settled in we wounded over for a couple of drinks it wasn’t long before all the other campers strolled in for their afternoon night cap and we all ended up drinking together and sharing each other’s adventures, one lady in particular (Rhonda) was a hoot and a have a chat just like me, of cause we hit it off.
The General Gordon Hotel, established in 1886, stands proudly amongst the cane fields, the pub has an awesome character and is about as Aussie as they come.
Get a look at the size of these Braziers wouldn't you like on of them in the back yard.
Our camp spot at the back of the Pub.
12-06-2012 The next morning Rhonda came to say goodbyes and I was telling her Des recons I was getting loud and she said her Hubby said the same of her, Arr stuff them we said, we all left for Mackay.
I did our washing that took over 2hrs to dry in these shit dryers while Des walked the town enjoying him self, I was not a happy chappy.
We left for Eungella another location Des's stayed at when with Telstra and our first stop was the hotel he stayed in for over six weeks. Talking to the bar maid she tried to talk us into coming back for dinner apparently the best food in town, I think it’s the only place in town to eat.
We left for our driver up the mountain to Eungella National Park through many twist in the road, what a creepy trip, I was pleased once we reached the top. We were going to do a full circle but ran into dirt road so we turned around to look for a place to stay; we stopped at the Historic Eungella Chalet to ask directions to the caravan park and check the view while we were there and what a view.
Built in 1933 as a guest house for people requiring clear mountain air, the Eungella Chalet has been a landmark in the local area for decades.
We didn't stay up the mountian we drove down and parked up in a nice quite park so Des can watch his favourite show the The Brothers in Arms.
The pub where Des stayed when working for Telstra.
After lunch I went for a walk along the beach with a stray dog following me while Des lazed around. I really liked Sarina it's seems like a lay back town on the water and not overpopulated. Across the road from where we were camped a house was being built and it was up for sale for $800.00 it would make for a great holiday home and a good investment.
