The Queen's Hotel is no stranger to disaster, the original hotel built in 1883, it burnt down in July 1902. The reconstruction was almost completed when Cyclone Leonta struck an the 9th March 1903, removing the roof and upper part of the new building. It was again repaired, but was burnt down in another fire in 1935. The hotel was rebuilt in 1936 and it is this structurre that stands today.
