20120422 Qld Tulwood

20120421 The tiny town of Talwood is well known for its annual Picnic Races held on the June long weekend each year. People travel from afar for this event and the town swells to ten times its normal population.

Arriving at Talwood starving, we parked up and walked to the shop for bread then home to make a chicken burger. Des starting preparing his pots then off we went on our big adventure, we finally found the dam Phil told us about and once Des baited the pots, we dropped them and headed home to wait for the big catch, we hope.

Des bating up for the big catch.

More campers had set up and we meet a kiwi couple Jan and Steven, Des was telling them about the yabbies and Jan was interested to watch so when it was time to pull the pots she came with. It was very exciting pulling each pot and counting how many were in each pull. Des meet another camper and showed him our catch he was digging out his pots and Des offered to take him on his next pull. They continued the same routine pulling their pots every two hours up till 6.00pm and even getting up at 6.00am, these guys are mad. We had a couple of drinks the last of a 1/2 a bottle with Jan and Steve that turned into a not so good debate, so at the first opportunity we departed.
Des and his partner in crime heading to collect their big catch.

20120422 Des and his partner in crime were up at 6.00am and repeated yesterday's events, back and forth every two hours.  I walked the town and took my picks, man I love these little country towns, people are so friendly.

The first school in Talwood was a tent set up by the railway workers children opening on the 22nd May 1911, a school committee was formed.  The population of Talwood grew so much the local residents requested a permanent school be established.  The school would need an average attendance off 12 children; the new school was 21ft x 14ft was opened on 30th October 1918.
The Police Station in Talwood, I know they have one guy in town to keep them busy and Des had to meet him.
Talwood Hotel, anyone looking for a job, they need staff for 6 to 8 weeks.
The farm machinery are massive this looksto me  like a plough.

Walking the town I saw this photo in one of the shop windows, get a look at the size of that pig.

Another camper turned up and Jan the Kiwi lady had a bitch to them about how many yabbies we were catching, her reply was there yabbies they breed like flies. Di and Geoff were their names and Geoff was over talking to Des, the next we knew he was digging his pot out and following Des down the road. It was a crack up, there were 5 vans in the park and four of them were following Des in catching Yabbies
23-04-2012 We were woken by the wind around 5.30am and had to get up to fold the tarp down after which I went back to bed and Des went to pull his pot.

Des pulling his big catch but the other guys kept on getting more than him, he couldn't figure out why, then realised his mates were using dog biscuits.

He puts the meat inside the chinese container which has holes in so it will sink, and in crawls the yabbies.

When he returned he was telling me, one of the locals stopped and asked if he was catching many, with that he said, hope in mate I'll show you where to catch some big ones, so stupid hoped in his car. This guy was built like a brick shit house, after he got in the car his first thought was, you idiot this guy could be a murderer, he started looking around the car for something to protect himself. The guy was telling Des how he just got busted for drugs, lost his car and water truck and he's been in and out of jail, and dickhead hope in his car. Lucky for Des he arrived home safe and was telling his story to everyone when Geoff said, ya Des that guy’s got a big dick, you could have been in real trouble, we had a great laugh. After brekkie we packed up and I was curious to check out the dam the big guy told Des about, we said good buys to Geoff and Di, but we could be back. We stayed at the new spot till 4.00pm and by the end had caught 363 yabbies. Des separated the large one to show his catch off to Geoff and Di who were cooking up their last catch, they were impressed.
24-04-2012  We said our good buys once again to Geoff and Di and left for Goondwindi.
