20260720 Qld Blackall

Image
20260720 Here we are again on the Barcoo R iver and someone’s in our usual spot, but we were nice and let them stay. Out come the yabbie pots and off he goes walking through the bush to his secret spot. A couple camped near the river said it was too stagnate to catch yabbies but in he goes anyway. After a couple of hours he’s off to check his pot, a bit embarrassed when he returns with two tiny yabbies showing the campers who Promptly walked off and returned with a huge mud crab. Here mate I have a freezer full of them as he proceeds telling Des the tale of tubs they caught in Darwin, then out comes the photos, and Des was certainly impressed. Des returned home yelling Lee, look what I caught holding up a mud crab in a sealed plastic bag, ya sure, so you caught it in the plastic bag, 😂.  We meet Lee-Ann and Rodger for a few drinks even though Lee-Ann doesn’t drink any more but she makes up for it with many a good old yarns and lots of laughs. Off he goes with his trusty compa...

20251217b Japan, Takayama

Image
20251217b After a little research, Sharyn struck gold with her dinner choice. Suzuya Restaurant, quietly rooted in Takayama since 1966, is a celebration of regional flavours and the passing of seasons. Housed in a traditional folk dwelling, its weathered exterior stands as a gentle reminder of a time when craftsmanship and patience shaped everyday life. Step inside and the world softens. Warm Hida wood surrounds the room, and the floor—laid with thick, woven tatami mats—absorbs sound and slows the pace. Seated in this traditional Japanese space, you feel less like a diner and more like a guest welcomed into history. Then comes the moment the menu truly speaks. The Magnolia Leaf Miso Steak arrives, fragrant and deeply comforting. Sweet, beautifully marbled Hida beef is grilled over a magnolia leaf, its aroma mingling with savoury miso, forest mushrooms, and wild vegetables gathered from the surrounding land. Each bite tells a story of place—of mountains, seasons, and a food culture shap...

20250914 On our way to Dalby to catch up with more friends Sue and Richard McNeill who have moved to a new home just out of Dalby but not far from there old home. But first we need to stop to pick up a roast, each time we visit Dalby we buy a roast for Sue to cook and OMG I don’t know what she does but it’s to die for. So far this trip we’ve had three roast meals at each friends home we’ve stayed and all have been different and amazing, I’m thinking we just keep on doing a round trip visiting friends and eating roast meals. Here we are on the steps that overlook the view from Sues new home, a much better view and wide open space. We stayed up chatting and catching up on old friends from the past, more so Sue and Des as they knew similar friends while Richard and I plan a drive to check out Jimbour House which he told me on our last visit he would take me the next time we visit. 15/09 After breakfast we pile into Richard’s car and head out to the back of Dalby to see   Jim...
