20120306 Vic Rosebud, Ray, Sorrento and Portsea

20120306 Rosebud is a pleasant town situated on the water around Port Phillip Bay, but we decided to drive to Portsea and check out Rye and Sorrento on the way.
Sorrento was the first town we checked out it has lots of cloths shops and a great 2nd hand shop, I wish we had shops like these,Des brought me a new top then onto Portsea to visit the National Park.

Sorrento reminded me a bit of Italian in some places but one shop that caught our eye was a fruit shop Des & I strolled through it was one of the methodically fruit and Vegie shop we have ever seen.

Sorrento Hotel

Looks very similar Italy.
Portsea- Point Nepean National Park and a 1.7k walk their and back to visit the Historical Quarantine Facility's that was all we could manage now can we, do it? of cause we can.

A fly by shot of hedges I thought looked interesting, I sure as hell wouldn't like to trim them.

These trees reach across the road creating a tunnel effect and looks impressive this is a very ritzy area.

On our walk to the Quarantine Station I was always about 10 steps ahead of Des which isn't unusual but he recons people must think were bluing, I can't help it if he walks so slow.

Spotted this sign on our walk to the Quarantine Station, a bit different.

Now your history lesson.

The Quarantine Station at Portsea operated between 1852 and 1978 with a large number of immigrants arriving after months at sea.  Quarantine was a most prominent institutional process in colonial Victoria and continued until well into the 20th century.

The arrival of sailing ship ‘Ticonderoga’ at the Port Philip Heads on 3 rd November 1852 after a voyage from Liverpool during which 100 people had died necessitated the opening of the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean. The site had already been selected to replace the former quarantine area off Point Ormond, near modern-day Elwood, but no ships had actually been directed there before the arrival of the Ticonderoga with 300 or so very ill people.

This Cannon sits at the entrance to the Quarantine Station.

The Administration Building was built in 1916.
As years passed and health regulations changed because of modern developments in medicine, the use of the Station for quarantine purposes became less frequent.

In 1952, the Army took over some of the buildings to establish a training college for cadets, while the Department of Health continued to maintain some buildings for use should the need for quarantine arise.

These carriages were used to carry suit cases from the ships to the quarantine area in the boiler room to be sterilised before being released.
The goods are placed into the disinfecting chambers in the boiler house and sterilises before being release.

They exit doors after the items are sterilized.

The boiler room hard hot work keeping this monster going.

Quarantine Station Straitjacket

Typhus Fever patients could maintain high temperatures of up to 105%F. This resulted in disorientation and delirium. In some cases the straitjacket was needed to protect the patient from harming them self.
A view of some of the buildings bordering Ticonderoga Bay. The chimney on the Boiler House can be seen clearly from the waters of the southern end of Port Phillip.

I was lucky enough to spot this Porcupine crawling into the bush when leaving the Quarantine station.

Ray- it was getting late and couldn't find a place to camp up then some young kids told us to go to the surf side you won't get hassled their we ended up in a car park over looking the surf but it was blowing a Gail and it got worse so we had to leave and go back to the calm side.  We found a spot with the added bonus of hot showers in the amenities.

The surf side of Ray beautiful spot but too windy.

I deleted my photo find and redo                        The calm side much nicer but the water is to cold for me.
