20120328 SA Kapunda to Burra

Need to dry out after Adelaide so I'm back on a bit of a fitness trip, I wonder how long it will last.  The weather is warming as we approach Burra, thank god we are so over the wind and cold weather, it's the first time I've worn shorts in weeks.

Monument entering Kapunda

Kapunda, a mining town first settled in 1839 by pastoralists, Bagot and Dutton. The development of the town owes its orgin to the discovery of copper in 1842. The Kapunda mine being the first significant metal mine in Australia.

We drove to this old deserted mine now a tourist route, unfortunately there is not much water left in the mine but the color ( as you can see) was very pretty green.

Even the rocks were colourful, I pinched some to take home for the grand kids, Des said there just rocks, they won't won't them, what would he no.

The fitness thing didn't last long, Des and I camped up in Burra near a BBQ, cooked prawns with salad followed with a few drinks and a game of Chess.

We found our free parking spot just down from the caravan park then walked the small.  I found a shop to spend some time in and Des brought me a pair of red gloves for $25.

Kingston Street Bridge-Opened in 1879 to replace the Bridge street structure, which had been washed away in the great floods of 1877.

29-03-2012  There are eight passport keys to unlock each heritage sites which most you can see from the road and or jump the fence, we brought 3.

Unicorn Brewery 1873-1902
This brewery was built in 1873 at a time when although there were nine hotels in the town it was to compete with an existing brewery. The railway had reached the town and this modern brewery boasted a tall malting tower, a cooperage, a steam driven system of pumps and extensive cellars.

This chimney standing at the entrance to the Burra Mine site, is a reconstruction of the original chimney for Peacock’s Winding Engine house built in 1857. The winding engine hauled from several shafts in the mine and was the longest serving engine at the mine. In 1971 the engine house was removed to make way for the modern open-cut mining operation, this flue was dismantled and rebuilt on this site. The figure at the top of the chimney is Johnny Green, the mascot of the Burra miners.
Des doing his usual pose for me in this old Aqueduct Tunnel 1870.
This engine house was built in 1858 by the stonemasons Paynter and. It commenced pumping in 1860 and ceased in 1877. The engine was removed for scrap in 1916. It is now a Museum housing an interpretive display on Cornish beam engines.

An view shot of the mining site
A very striking Thistle well worth a shot I thought.
Between 1971 & 1981 the moden open-cut operation worked to a depth of 100 mtrs with concentrate producing about 24,000 tonof copper metal.  The low grade ore was converted to copper oxide used in timber and chemical fertilizer.  The greenish colour of the water which changes in intensity throughout the year, is not due to copper content but to a light scattering effect, caused by temperature changes in the water.
Erected in 1856, it was the first gaol in SA outside of Adelaide, it provided for thirty prisoners, male and female. When the gaol closed in 1897, the prisoners were transferred to Gladstone Gaol, the gaol was renovated and opened as a Girls’ Reformatory in 1897 and closed in 1922.
The entrance to the Jail, that shouldn't be to hard to escape, what do you reckon Shane (brother).

This should bring back some fond memories Shane, is this what it was like in your time.  The yard in the Jail.
That's broken bits of glass which covers the length of the wall, now that I wouldn't like to try and climb over.

Hampton 1857-A township founded by Thomas Powell in 1857 & named after the home town of his wife in England.  It was modelled on an English village and was home to 30 miner's.
Des: what the F--- am I doing here, this is nothing but falling rocks wall. We got a key for this & we could have jumped the fence.
We completed our tour after 1.00pm and decided to have lunch at the local, $11 for chops, chips & salad and it was Yummy.
