20111129 Updated Qld Gil Weir

20111129 Left Dolby & headed inland to Condamine, where we were told is a nice town to stop but first, we check out the town of Kogan, a little town on the Condamine Highway where sits one of Australia’s most modern and environmentally friendly, Kogan Creek Power Station.

The name Kogan derives from an early pastoral run called Kogan Creek and in the 1800 was a charging station on the Dalby-Roma coach route before the Western Railway line was constructed. These days Kogan has little to offer but Des managed to find some little old ladies in the hall who asked him if he wanted a cup of tea, we had a chat, took some photos & left for Condamine.

The town has a bit of a past and in memory of this onetime Kogan resident a famous bush artist constructed, The Hugh Sawrey walkway. The sculpture features Sawrey playing cards with his best mate, “Darkie” Dwyer.

Sculpture made from various tools, scrap iron and much more, it sits opposite the Kogan Hotel in Queensland, created by, Hugh Sawrey, an artist of his time.

We drove on to Condamine and I'm dammed what is so nice about this town, there nothing there so we drove straight on to Miles where we stopped at a Lagoon to make lunch & have a leisurely stroll around the Lagoon.

Chinaman’s Lagoon Rare Waterlilies

The Chinaman's Lagoon waterlilies are significant as they are a species of rare topical waterlily (Nymphea Gigantea var. neorosea) extinct in its natural habitat and now only surviving in a handful of locations throughout Australia of which Chinaman's Lagoon is one.

We camped the night at Gil Weir just before Miles where I had a quick dip in the murky creek while Des looked on, then it was time for a nice coldie just on noon, because I can. Des rode off on my trusty bike then it was my turn, well that's our exercise for the day as I cracked a can and settled in for a relaxing afternoon. Des cooked Red Emperor, I made a lovely salad the we sat outside enjoying the peace and quite of our surroundings.

Our camp for a couple of days.

Des taking a step back in time, dropping donuts, well trying to.

If your a keen fisher man, unlike Des the weir is stocked with golden perch and Murray cod.

 Sunset over the Weir.
