20190518 Qld Stonehenge

Image
20190518 Another town that backs onto the Mitchell River with the Johnston Range as the back drop and the beginning of the channel country through the Barcoo Shire. I’m not sure what I’m expecting from this town but just the name “Stonehenge” sounds interesting as we continue our drive along this straight stretch of road. Arriving at Stonehenge we parked up and walked to the pub for a beer as we do that Aussie wave trying to keep the flies from nose diving into your nostrils, talk about annoying bloody creatures. Over a cold ale we chat to the barmaid who had Desie’s interest at “Yabbies” and the creek is in abundance. Sit boo boo, now look into his eye, now spit at him, good boy.😅😆 Bronco Branding is a Rodeo and Stonehenge has hosted several Australian Championships in the comp, at least 4 champions calling Stonehenge home and once again we’re in the wright place but at the wrong time. An old windmill overlooking the town at the information centre. ...

20190518 Qld Jundah

Image
20190518 Heading to Jundah along patches of narrow, straight roads while taken in the scenery. In the centre of the channel Country lays the little town of Jundah whose name comes from the aboriginal word for, woman. Gazetted as a town in the 1880’s and was important for opal mining for 20 years, but the lack of water caused the mines to close. I quickly hold up my camera to snap a fly by shoot of the eagle lunching on some Roo meat. This is the second one we’ve seen but the first to actually get a photo. And she takes flight as the van moves closer to his inviting pry. The wild flowers are in abundance in the great outback. The cattle roam’s the land, crossing the road at their own pleasure. Jundah backs onto the Mitchell River and we were told its abundance in yabbies. The welcome sign as we enter the town of Jundah replicates the history of the shop front still to be seen in the main street. The outback shop at Jundah and the only shop here to serv...

20190516 Qld Kyabra Creek to Windorah

Image
20190516 After leaving Toompine we headed to Quilpie where we fuelled up before our long journey to Windorah and after 300ks I’d had enough, I really don’t like driving long distance anymore, then we saw a camp ground on the creek, that's us for the night. To our surprise the weather hasn’t turned cold so the flies and mosquitoes just about carry you away and we're restricted to the van, day and night when all we want to do is sit around a camp fire and cook a camp oven. We camped at Kyabre Creek rest area for the night which would have been a great spot to camp for a few days right on the creek and no one in site. 17-05-2019 We hit the bitumen again heading to Windorah, one of the three towns in the Barcoo Shire, and named after the local aboriginal word “Big Fish”, although according to an account of the Durack settlers, the name means high, stony place. I assume the signs means calves ahead only we didn't see any. Cross...
