20250608 The Grawin, is a group of opal fields that makes up, Glengarry, Sheepyard, and Mulga Rush. Opals were first discovered in 1905 by Charles Phipp while working on Morendah Station just east of Grawin, before mining was even thought of in this area. It was in 1908 when Hammond Hill first discovered Opal and Grawin was established, then came Richard Hill in 1920, mining was a lot more difficult than that of today using a picks and shovels and was all done by the light of a candle. It was in 1928, an opal named ‘The Light of the Worlds’, the size of a man’s fist and weighed 0.45kg was discovered causing a flurry of activity and inflow of miners seeking to make their fortune.
