20240614 Qld Yaamba to Marlborough

20240614 We take off along the A1, Yaamba Rd looking for a camp for the night checking out The Cave but there’s no camping so it looks like Yaamba could be the one. We’re pretty sure the free camp is on the highway which we try to avoid but it’s after 2pm and we need to stop somewhere. Look there’s a spot, Des turns around to check it out, a gravel pit and we’re all on our own and only one house in the distance, this will do us.

We were having a nap when we heard a car drive in so we jumped out of bed to check it out, it’s just a backpacker who looks like she’s staying the night. We grab a beer and step outside and watch the sheep feeding on dregs of grass, the ground is dry and there’s been no rain for sometime.

Here we were having a quiet beer when a 2nd 4wd pulled in and parked right in front of us, what the hell. We expected guys to jump out so you can imagine our surprise when a young girl hopped out then another, by this time Desies eyes were popping out of his head but you should have seen his face when four very young female backpacker got out, he was in his element, stop staring I said.

The back of their 4WD was packed full of gear, tents, table, chairs, cooking gear and not to mention suitcases. They all worked together and set up their beds and camping gear before playing on their phones when we saw a fox run by, lock your food away.

20240615 We woke to another morning of fog and by the time we left the backpackers had long gone, we drove into Yaamba to cook breakfast then back onto the Bruce Hwy. Taking in the scenery but we still haven’t found that special spot near a Creek where Des can catch some yabbies. We arrived at the Marlborough Hotel and camped at the back for $5 per person with showers, yes I remember this publican from when Lisa and I were here and ordered a steak with an extra plate, no extra plates aloud, he was a miserable prick back then and still is.

The Marlborough Hotel where the miserable publican locks the outside shower’s from 9am to 2pm, he recons it’s for cleaning but I think it so we don’t use his showers, what! 5 hours to clean two amenities, he’s a joke.

However we did go for a beer, but was shocked when we were charged $8.50 for a stubbie, yep we left after one, Des certainly won’t return here.

I found where I wright on the wall when Des and I were here in 2012, as you enter from the front of the pub turn first left then sharp left again, you are facing the wall and about 3/4 up is our names, how cools that.

The walls a full of signatures from people who stayed at the pub from all over the world.
The recycle bins in town have an inviting smile, not like the sour faced publican at the Pub.

I walked the town and found the town’s museum and gift shop, with a lovely display of Chrysoprase Rocks.

Known for: Mentally, chrysoprase encourages non-judgmental attitudes, can reduce superiority and inferiority complexes and help you avoid speaking out unthinkingly in anger. It bolsters clarity of thought and creativity by attracting abundance and success in new ventures and promotes fidelity within business, well I’m not sure about that but it’s a pretty rock.

A mural at the Museum depicting the history of the area.

The first shuttle machine to use two threads was invented in 1846 by Elias Howe who challenged five of the swiftest hand sewers to a race. Although his machine completed the task in half the time no machines sold as it was feared they would " ... reduce the whole fraternity of tailors to beggary".

This cart came from old Marlborough 1880’s and was used to cart water from Coppermine Creek to old Marlborough township, it was also used to cart wood for the fire place and stoves in the area.

I found this huge Chrysoprase rock in the church yard across the road from the museum, is a gemstone variety of chalcedony that contains small quantities of nickel and a valued gem since antiquity worn by Cleopatra and Alexander the Great and many other famous identities. It has been mined in the area since the 1950’s.

I love the thoughts that go into these murals, they are so creative.

The End
