20240611 Qld Calliope River to Rockhampton

20240611 We left Dicks and headed towards Gladstone, we have no idea where our next camp will be, maybe we might find a nice creek to camp on for a few days. This road going into Turkey Beach in a bloody nightmare, the whole road is in bad need of repair so look out for the road works and the continuous stopping along the way. Back on the A1, Bruce Highway heading North, OMG there’s signs posted all along the highway saying Fatigue Zone, I just don’t get why. We passed over the Boyne River in Benaraby then onto Calliope, it a nice spot so maybe we stay here for a few days.

Before the Benaraby Bridge was constructed in 1932 traffic along the Bruce Highway had to contend with the conditions of the Boyne River when car would have to wait to cross the tidal river navigating through the tidal water. The bridge was rebuilt in 1970 and renamed in December 2009 as the Turich-Mann Bridge to honour two pioneering families in the Gladstone – Benaraby area.

The Bruce Highway is a major highway in Queensland which starts in Brisbane and ends in Cairns and the longest highway route in Australia. At 1,679 kilometres (1,043 mi). The highway was named after a former Queensland and federal politician, Harry Bruce.
Did you know the Bruce Highway is currently considered the most dangerous of all the roads in Australia, and was named in the UK's Driving Experience's 22 deadliest roads in the world, well there has been two major accidents in the last couple of days so maybe that could be correct.

20240614 We stayed a few days on the Calliope River thats become very popular over the years for camping on either side of the river. The river is always running and you can swim if you’re game, as there has been crock sightings in the past not to mention the box jellyfish at certain times of the year. After dragging myself out of bed each day I grab my book and soak up the beautiful winter sun before taking a stroll to the historic village just up the hill for an ice cream. Later in the afternoon we would grab a beer and walk the camp sites stopping for a chat while checking out some of the van, some very impressive.

The owner was more than happy to show off his amazing craftsmanship and gave me some great ideas for when I get my van renovated.

Everything has a place and it goes in it’s place, reminds me of my Fisher and Paykel days with all the brain washing courses we did, but I was very impressed how this guy utilised his space on the other side of his van.

I especially like the BBQ that’s attached to the back door so when you open the door your stove is ready to use, once you’ve finished cooking just close the door and it’s out of sight, so cool.

I was sitting down on the river bank enjoying my tranquil surroundings with my happy face on when I looked up and saw this sign, confused I asked a young couple what it meant, no idea they said but I like the smell of your lettuce.🥹

A fire is a great attraction and another way of meeting some interesting people, and some not so interesting, its also a good way to pass the time away.

20240614 On our way to Rockhampton and we just passed into the Tropic of Capricorn, the southernmost latitude where the Sun can be seen directly overhead. These big towns are good to get all your chores done but once it’s done all I can say is, “Get Me Out of Here” traffic, traffic and more traffic.

We washed, shopped, ate and left.

This historic Queensland Hotel is the Saleyards Distillery, once an iconic hotel originally built in 1881. The pub was once a unique and quirky distillery specialising in the distillation of rum, gin and vodka.

The museum tells the story of the development of railroad transportation in Rockhampton and is set in the 120-year-old Archer Park Rail Station with the main attraction being a fully restored Purrey Steam Tram, which still operates every Sunday.

We passed this sign when leaving Rocky so I googled what it meant, interestingly, a ring road (also known as circular road, beltline, beltway, circumferential (high)way, loop or orbital) a road or a series of connected roads encircling a town, city or country with the purpose to reduce traffic by offering an alternate route around the city for drivers who do not need to stop in the city core. Ring roads can also serve to connect suburbs to each other, allowing efficient travel between them.
