20230511 SA Normanville to Yankalilla

Another one of those quaint villages on the west coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula where the maple vines add a unique character to the town. Normanville is the largest coastal settlement on the Fleurieu Coast, established by Robert Norman, the colony's first dental surgeon in 1849 who owned hundreds of acres of land and formed the township using bricks made from local clay.

Rich in history, Normanville still has a number of buildings and sites that connect the present to the past.

This way to the Beach Des

Normanville has had its far share of jetty’s, the first was in 1910 however Mother Nature took its toll when a huge storm caused damage resulted in serious damage to the outer end of the jetty. It was in 1974 it was decided to build a shorter jetty to maintain a structure that is capable of surviving the conditions.

The beach to the left of the jetty.

Hooded Plovers are a small beach-nesting bird with a black 'hood' and black-tipped red beak that are on the edge of extinction with only 3,000 individuals remaining in south-eastern Australia.

The Normanville Hotel was established in 1851 by Dr Robert Norman, making it one of South Australia’s oldest Hotels. It is also one of the longest continuously family operated hotels in South Australia, having been owned and operated by members of our family since 1973.

I so wish I could play this old piano but I know someone who can, what about it Roster.

This colourful Newsagency makes a pleasant change to the otherwise normal buildings in the Main Street.

One of the many Street Art’s in town.

At the front of Foodland is a wall of bird murals.

The designs were by Nicole Black who worked with the local art group to create designs that would represent the location.
Next stop was Yankalilla a small town that sit just below the Mount Lofty Range, were in the 1950’s it was one of the most important centre on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and today it’s a service centre for the surrounding districts. Each town we enter have all been lovely clean tidy town with a bit of the passed and present to interest those travellers passing through.

By 1854 Yankalilla was one of the five major towns in the colony of South Australia, it was serviced by a jetty on the coast which was used to ship wheat out.
