20210329 With easter around the corner Des goes in search of a camp where we can settle in before the mad rush of camper's hit the road, he found it and only 100 ks up the road, that will do me. Entering Delungra and over a one way bridge into a town that has a reputation as the Poorest, Happiest Town in Australia" but the Tax Office named it as the lowest earning town in the country with the average resident earning just $21,691 ($17,089 USD) a year, making it the poorest region in Australia. But don't blink or you will miss it as we drive through the town of Bundarra who takes clame to the legend of the bushranger known as Thunderbolt (Fred Ward) who in 1868 stole two horses belonging to police inspector Brown.
We find a spot on the hill overlooking the camp, fire pit, and all to our self for the easter break and was having a lovely quite time, but then this bloody Winnebago decided to camp beside us with two dogs and we all know how much I love dogs.
And here are the culprits, John and Nola who took over our fire with their two little sausage dogs Penny and Snoopy who decided to mark his territory near our camp table, just chase him out said Nola as we sent him on his way with a boot to the but, I'm kidding .
The single Lone Pine Bridge over the Gwydir River on our way to Bundarra.
20210330 I grabbed my camera and walked to the old retired bridge where the floods have left behind it's debris and the river is still flowing but freezing.
The old bridge over the Gwydir River where only a week ago the floods levels had reached the camp grounds above. Built in 1919 the bridge was constantly closed during minor flooding resulting in a 95 kilometre detour for road users.
The community has waited over 70 years for the new bridge at Bundarra to be built, the new Emu Crossing Bridge was much needed and cost a mere $4 million.
20210331 Today is the day we got to meet our new neighbors, John, Nola and their dogs Penny and Snoopy, talk about a mother hen, I got exhausted just watching her, airing their fluffy beds or setting up their day bed around the fire, taking them for walks and watching their every move, these K9's were living the dream that's for sure and I must say they never barked and by the end they had Des and even me throwing their ball as they proudly returned it at our feet for another throw.
Every morning Nola was up and stoking the fire for their morning cuppa before cooking in her large camp fry pan and it looks like John's turn this morning but after our big night it's flared up in no time.
20210401 We all hit it off, having many laughs as Nola feed us up on chips and dips trying to fatten us up but we have a camp stew for dinner tonight so just a few nibbles as she sticks a bowl of cheezels and dip on our table, she's such a bugger.
The Gwydir River
Our last day here and we had a visit from some friends of Nola's and John who own a property in this area. We make some nibbles and settle in for a chat over a few beers that turned into a few more, well, for Des and I it did as Nola makes another cuppa. .
Penny and Snoopy are never far away and while Penny chases his ball Penny likes to roam the grounds looking for that special place for a pee.
I collected these wild flowers grown in the shrub around the camp ground.
We had a fun time meeting new people while sitting around our fire with Nola feed us junk every afternoon.
