20180419 VIC Warrnarbool
20180419 Des seems to think we’ve been to Warrnambool but I beg to differ and as I’m always right it must be true and if we did, we obviously drove straight past it so we stopped to check it out. Well! what little bit of history can I dig up about Warrnambool, yes it was once occupied by the aboriginals, as many as 80,000 years ago until the white man invaded and stuffed it all up but I’m guessing you already knew that.
FLAGSTAFF HILL MARITIME VILLAGE
Flagstaff Hill is a state heritage site overlooking Lady Bay dating back to the 19th century port and town and holder of Victoria's largest maritime shipwreck collection, have I bored you yet?
We stopped at the information centre which turned out to be Flagstaff Hill and I'm taking my usual photo when curiosity got the better of me so through the door I went for a closer look, unaware we had to pay and I know exactly what your all thinking, trust me I’m telling the truth.😏
The Garrison Gun
A Cannon 80 Pound Rifled Muzzled Loading Gun on iron carriage and slide, made in 1866 in England.
This is where our boys slept, how cute are they, I recon they slept standing up.
I'm sure I was born in the wrong era I can just see me driving one of these while chatting up the local spunks, well maybe once.
The Lifting Frame shows how they were able to lift Great Yards and Huge sails aloft on board ships.
The Old Fire Hose Wagon thank god for modern engineering say.

And I just love the dated Post Box.
I the early days of settlement the southern Australian coastline was treacherous for navigation, and there are 700 known shipwrecks along the Victorian coast alone so Flagstaff Hill is home to an extensive collection of artefacts recovered from these ships
Model of the Loch Ard which hit a reef in thick mist while transporting immigrants and cargo from England to Melbourne in 1878 and there were only two survivors, 19 years old Tom Pearce (crew mate) and passenger Eva Carmichel, of the 52 people that perished only four bodies were ever found.

This 1.44 mtr tall porcelain peacock was on it's way to the 1880 International Exhibition in Melbourne, it was lost with the ship, two days later it washed ashore still in its packing case with minor damage to its beak. It's insured for over four $4,000,000, wow.
After our excursion through the Maritime Village we dive to the beach and check out the surroundings.
This was once an Aquarium situated on the breakwater and opened as a public attraction until 1998. Amongst the species captured, kept, bred, and displayed were Blue-Ringed Octopus from Stingray Bay.
No, it's not my photo but I sure would have loved to have seen it. What an amazing shot of a wave crashing over the Warrnambool Breakwater.
