20150903 WA Nunnup

20150903  Located within the Blackwood river Valley region is the mill town of Nannup, a lovely quant little town with an abundance of historic. The name ‘Nunnup’ comes from the Noongyar people who lived in the area, and is said to mean ‘stopping place’ or ‘meeting place by the water’.  This seems an appropriate name as prior to settlement, the only place you could cross the Blackwood River was Nannup.

Through out the town are flower boxes with many different colors of these beautiful Tulips. Held in August Nunnup festival celebrates gardens in winter. Each year the 'garden village' comes alive with the colours of tulips and daffodils adding color through out the town.

The old 'Art Deco' building was constructed in 1950 for the family pharmacist but was later turned into a bakery.

Walking through the town we came upon the very colorful fence with many different design, pretty cool I thought.

The Nunnup Tiger
The legend has been kept alive with intermittent sighting the most recent was in the late 1990’s however some of the locals, having had enough of the attention, reportedly painted strips on a sheep, added a tail and left it in the paddock.

We asked one of the locals if there was any free camping here, theirs a park down the road were vans park all the time so we set up  then discovered power in the amenities so we waited till dark and connected her up.  After pouring a wine I phone my sister Donna for a bit of a chat.  So here we were both walking around the park on our mobiles like a couple of teenagers.

Check this out, I spotted this guy riding down the street and was lucky enough to run into him at the park so we waved him over to check out his bike.  A Harley Davidson Chopper bike electric operated which can get up to 50 kilometers and he brought two on line for $900 each.  That's just what I need when I go to Terenes for drinks.

The old rail bridge over the Blackwood River was built in 1909 and has gone under many repair after flood waters ravished the area, the bridge in now used as a trail walk.

The tree on the LHS shows the water level indicator for each year and the heigest being 1910 while the indicator on the RHS I have zoomed in to the water level for 1910 which is the highest level on the tree as of the 03 Sept 2015 when we camped at Nunnup.

These eight contemporary totems were designed and created by community members to showcase eight aspects of Nunnup's culture heritage, which are shown below.
