05-04-2012  After leaving Silverton we came across these little fellows crossing the road, we were wondering if they were wild.

I've been hanging out to catch up on this bloody blog which I have not been able to do because of no reception, just to show you a very special photo of Des.

The headframe was originally located at the Kintore Shaft, the principal of the Central Mine, and prior to that at No.5 shaft at the South Mine.  The double cylindrical winding drums are 3m (10 feet) in diameter and operated at 86 rpm using 35mm wire rope with a breaking strain of 74 tons.
This type of Air Compressor was commonly installed after 1900 in small power houses at various mines.

Towering above the city’s skyline, Broken Hill’s Miner’s Memorial stands as a monument to over 700 people who lost their lives underground in the Silver City, more than Australian soldiers died in the Vietnam War.

The youngest person to die in the mines in Broken Hill was Master John Vaughan who died at the age of 14 in the late 1800’s. Along with date of death and age of each person memorialised a brief description of how they were killed, ‘run over by wagon’, ‘premature explosion’, drowned in a well’, fell off scaffolding’ and crushed by boiler’.

Now for the moment I've been waiting for, my favorite shoot, I laughed so much I had tears running down my cheeks, Des recons I'm a bitch, but what new.  You gotta admit he looks like a little Leprechaun.

I looked up the meaning of Leprechaun and nearly pea’ed myself laughing; it’s a type of Irish folklore, usually taking on the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat that enjoys mischief.  The Leprechaun spends all his time making shoes, and stores away all their coins in a hidden  pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, now how appropriate.

We parked up outside of town that night had a few drinks with a couple we parked near but had a early night.
06-04-2012  We were told about Bell's Milk Bar set back in time from 1892 and to sure to see the large painting in the Art museum just the size of it was worth a look so we drove back to Broken Hill.

Ducks running after Des expecting food so softy Des went for some bread.

 Feed me Des, how cute.
Des feeding all the Ducks they came from everywhere.
Love the reflection.
This park is part of Perilya Mines and from the park you can observe the surface structure of one of the few still operating mines in Broken Hill.
Bells Milk Bar started as a small confectionery store called ‘F. Fenton Confectioner’ in 1892, who was a cordial maker.  Fenton hires John Joseph Longman as his apprentice and by 1908 Longman was left in charge who later acquired the business.  Less Bell’s mother, Minnie Pearl Davis became an apprentice cordial maker in 1903 that married Mr Longman and had three children.
Longman was killed in 1918 in WW1 leaving Minnie Pearl to run the shop, later known as Pearly Longmans. She remarried a Les Bell in 1923 & the shop was then known as “Pearly Bell’s’ being the true pioneer of Bell’s running the shop solo. Legend has it she would stand in the streets until it was devoid of a single soul before closing; Thus ensuring no one was ever denied the opportunity to purchase one last special Bell’s drinks, this is the original site of Bell’s.

Bell's was closed, 'bugger' next the Art Museum which opened at 10am every day but not today looks like we miss out again.

Geoff DeMain sculpture tells of the Darling River conciliation and discovery.  Constructed from river red gum and copper from disused "coppers", the canoe represents the flow of the Darling and the impact of colonisation to the traditional people of this region.
The story poles illustrate a project completed by the Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Practices.  Each student researched their own design and represented it by carving an image into red river gum poles.

 That all from Broken Hill
