20120315 Vic The Great Ocean Road

20120315 The Great Ocean Road starts from Torquie and goes 270km along the Victoria Southern Coastline, well that's what Des told me so if it's incorrect it's his fault.  We are in Torquie eating a Banana sandwich on freshly baked bread with crusty edges Yum, Yum, it was that good we had another.  We were told Lorne is a must to see so we finished eating and back on the road.

Now get ready because you are going to see a lot of the coastal waters Opps that right you already have.

Some fly by shoots along the way and I took heaps, all Des could here all the way was click, click, click.

A bit of history on the Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road would go on to become one of the world's largest memorial sites. The development of the road was a lengthy operation which took 14 years. Many of the workmen lived in tents or small campsites along the road with their families and were on roughly 10 shillings per 8 hours. There was no machinery used during the construction, only hand tools. The first half of the Great Ocean Road was open in March 1922, toll were introduced on the road in December of that year to recoup some of the cost back. The final installment opened in November 1932.

Stopped at the Memorial site for some picks, well I made Des stop for this one.  Theirs always people around who won't their photos taken and like to return the complement.

Des was telling about this house on stilts he stopped and took a photo of in 1988 when I said ha, look at that house, that's it said Des, not a bad view from up there, we were wondering how much it would cost to build a holiday home like that.

After the arch we were heading for Lorne when we spotted a van parked up on an off ramp on the water, what a great place to stay but it was too late this thing is a shit to turn around and we were driving up a mountain, then Des say a chance, (not a good one I thought to my self) but he did it and I was glad.  Check this out we couldn't ask for a better view or position and all for free.

Des and I enjoying our usual wine and beer.

Des told me a story of his surfing day at 15yrs when on New Years Eve they were chased by the police, they would run from Queensland to the New South Wales boarder where the police were waiting for them then run back through the Queensland police hoping not to get caught, it was having fun in those days.

Parked up on the beach for the night with a few to many drinks and lots of laughs.  Des keeps waving to the mobile homes going by and when they don't wave back he reckons there pricks.  Why would they wave to an old fart they don't know, I think he's a nutta.
Des posing for me, he hates it but has no chose.
Me, I set the camera on auto so Des can take a shot or I would never get one.

Unusual rock formation along the shore.

20120316 I went for a long walk along the beach while Des cleaned up and cooked brickie. I didn't were shoes thinking walking on sand should be fine, but I paid for it, won't do that again.
Des has a special surprise for me he thought he would take me to see Erskine Waterfalls at Loane, it's only a 10-minute walk but when we got there, we couldn't take the van down due to a steep descend.   We parked up and started walking, and walking and walking every bend it got steeper, will we keep on going? ya it can't be much further.   It started raining, this is bull shit another bend, that's it the rain was heaver so we turned around and began our walk back up this steep hill, our little legs were aching we were wet and out of breath, thank God a couple stopped and asked if we would like a lift, we both said YES.

Gee Des, what's your next surprise.

We drove back to Lorne checked out the shops, I spotted a really nice pair of boots so when Des was looking at real estate (as he does in every town we go through) I check out the price $326.00 I think we'll give them a miss.  Some of these towns are really expensive for cloths, nice to look at but not to buy.

Cabins in Lorne, cute.

A lake in Lorne which has a Caravan Park situated on it.

We left Lorne driving along the G.O.R it's a site to behold,  I set my camera on fast mode and clicked away it was still raining so it was difficult to stop at scenic views, thank god for the truck.  We parked up on Kennett River away from the wind the surf on one side a river on the other.  A couple of German girls stopped and asked Des about camping and Des said, camp here but they were afraid they would get into trouble with the police, Killer-don't worry about it if they turn up I'll deal with them, so they camped next to us.
A fly by shot on the way to Kennett River.

Our camp spot.
Through the bridge is the surf side.

Another one of those camper vans with its famous signs.
17-03-2012  Love the beach walks trying to make up for the drinking but I don't think it's working but my cloths still fit me, so far.  The 12 Apostle next I'm soo excited.
