20200621 Nocccundra comes from the pastoral run, name in 1866, which derived from the Aboriginal words nocka, meaning water and tunga meaning smell. In 1882 a town came to life with the construction of the Noccundra Hotel, in fact it’s the only building. On a walk the flies are bloody annoying so on goes the fly net to stop the buggers from ending up the nose. The historical outback Noccundra Hotel is built of coarse sandstone which was apparently sourced from N.S.W. The hotel was operated in conjunction with a store and was well-placed along stock and trading routes to South Australia and New South Wales, serving travelers and nearby pastoral stations, but the closure of the store in 1933 and then the police station in 1959 led to the township decline. The Wilson River passes through the land belonging to Nockatunga Station, which was originally settled by the Drynan brothers in 1868, it played a very large part in the settlement of the area.
