20240714 Qld Goovigen

20240714 Gee this is a big trip, just 22ks up the road we turned of onto the Goovigen Connection Rd for 6ks passing over Collide Creek then into the little town of Goovigen. We arrived at the camp only to find a caravan club has dominated all the power pointes, bugger. We parked and walked the town, which didn’t take us long, there really isn’t anything here and what is here is all closed down, even the pub, apparently this town took a real hit when Covid hit.

Goovigen is a local Aboriginal word for, box tree, a species of Eucalyptus.

The Main Street with the Hotel on the corner but is unfortunately closed along with all the other stores.

St Brigid's Catholic Church was officially opened in 7 April 1935, it was built from timber at a cost of £612.

The corrugated iron Historical School of Arts Hall was built in 1929, a group of dedicated history lovers took up the challenge to save the site, turning it into the heritage heart of the town and a significant attraction for visitors.

ENGEL HOMESTEAD: I have no idea how old this homestead is but I’m thinking around the 1940’s.

The life and times of the pioneer families and this wonder is still standing.

Goovigen was originally established as a supply depot for the railways and was named by the Queensland Railway on 27 April 1920.

The tracks are all that remains as a reminder of what was once a busy supply line.

This old hub certainly looks abandoned but I think it could be under repair although I don’t know why you want to live here.

I found these old relics in the back street, he’s obviously a collector of old tractors as in the shed out the back was about another 7.

The End
