20240624 Proserpine next for some supplies and a coffee then onto Bowen to check out the seafood, Des is hanging out for some fresh prawns. We are expecting a bit of rain and we know there is no free camping in shitty Bowen, we know that after a bad experience the last time in Bowen. Apparently the councillor has dibs on the caravan parks and won’t allow free camping even though the locals are screaming out for tourisam so I’m keeping my eyes out for a spot off the road.
We stopped for lunch in front of the Big Mango and while there we pig out on a Mango ice cream, why not.
We passed the salt works heading into town, it was in the mid 1920s when the Cheetham Salt works produced 29,000 tonnes of crude salt per annum.
The shops are full and the trawlers are happy with there catch and are now ready for their next trip to sea, Des is one happy chappie, he’s got his prawn fix, now to get the hell out of Bowen.
The Rubbish Bins in front of the fish markets, cute.
One of the scean’s as we head out of Bowen along Delemothe Rd towards Collinsville.
Passing over the Don River and she is sure Dry.
Driving along Peter Delemothe Rd with Mount Aberdeen in the distance while trying to find a place to camp.
This is us for the night, just in front of a property called Mossvale.
We sit outside and take in the view of Mount Aberdeen in the distance and watch the many 4WD go pass with that V8 sound.
20240625 We did have every intention of heading to Collinsville but there is no caravan park so that means no power so we decided to return to Bowen and book into the Palms Caravan Park to see the rain out. I don’t mind the rainy days sitting inside our van, it’s a great time to catch up on my blog and lay back and watch some Netflix or just read a good book.
Last night we sat around the fire, with some of the locals and backpackers while having a few ales, it great to talk to people travelling around Australia from other countries and hearing their views. Forget about even trying to use the camp kitchen it’s just overflowing with backpackers, there everywhere, there everywhere.
20240628 Time to move on so we grab a shower and begin our task of packing up the van and locking everything down, the good thing about the motor home is if we miss anything I can quickly jump in the back and fix it before we end up with a big mess. We leave Bowen and follow the Clarke Range in the distance not to mention the many small crop farms, and I thought Bowen was only about the mango’s, that would explain all the backpackers in town.
I was surprised to see so many small crop farms in Bowen, it makes for a nice change instead of destroying good farm land for housing development like they did in the Redlands.
Strawberries farms are also on the menu as we pass fields of them ready to pick.
Clarke Range that connects to the Great Dividing Range
The End
