20240314 NSW Deepwater
20240316 Just north of Glen Innes lies the small town of Deepwater, which in 1839 a Station was taken up as a pastoral property and a village was created on the northern bank of the Deepwater River. We all know with every town comes a Pub so in 1865 the Deepwater Hotel was Established, now called the Longhorn Hotel, and the Aborigines name for Deepwater is Talgambuun, meaning dry country with many dead trees. The Hotel is not just a hotel but a free camp ground with many rooms for rent and not to mention the wonderful meals and great hospitality.
What can I say, if you need a good laugh head to the bottom pub, the Longhorn, I'm sure you will meet some of the locals who will put a smile on your dial and these ladies certainly had us laughing, thanks ladies for making our stay memoriable.
The Longhorn Bar and Grill is at the bottom of the town.
The rain is coming so we camped up beside the Pub to see it out and with free power, bonus.
The interior of the hotel, a typical country pub with some awesome memorabilia and great hospitality, what more could a weary traveller ask for.
The sign say's it all.
😋😂
Des meets a couple of the locals, and what funny guys they were, piss head's never the les, but fun guys.
I managed a quick photo with Leanne the bar tender, you can’t be behind the bar she said, aww she’ll be right I said.
The Main Street in Deepwater, and one of the main truck route through to Queensland.
20240319 With the rain gone we take off the bikes and go in search of a camp ground we were told about, The Common Camp ground was just three kilometres down the road and just what we like, plenty of wood and no one in site, just the odd car pasing by.
After we set up on goes the gum boots, except for Des, (but he's a tweet), and we search for some wood, as usual the area around the camp has been stripped so we jump a fence where theres ample for our needs.
I set up the Boom Box, cracked a can and we settled in for a few nights.
20240322 Bugger the rain is heading our way again so we had to pack up and head back to the Pub, Ooo dear what a dilemma. The same crew were there so we got to have some more laughs and a game of pool we Leanne the Pool shark and yes she thrashed me but I will return one day for a rematch.
The 110 year old Bank and Bank Managers Residence has been converted into good old fashioned accommodation. The property has been restored to its former glory and is the ideal setting for High Teas and Dinner parties.
A German baker decided to build a cinema in 1934 but in 1936 his cinema burnt down so he rebuilt it into the brick and concrete Art Deco cinema we have today. The cinema closed in 1964 after the owner passed away.
Des and I take a bike ride around the town checking out the sites when he stopped at the old Post Office to pay a bill.
Deepwater Railway Station was opened in 1886 and in its heyday became the busiest and biggest freight centre just north of Newcastle. The building is not open for viewing but you can wander around and have a look. Walk around the back to the platform where there is some railway line still there and to the north of the railway station building is a water tank and filling pipe that was used to replenish water for steam engines.
Meet Bev the Cook and I must say she makes a mean chicken parmigiana, I find the parma a cheep pub meal but OMG, Bev's Parma was the best I've ever had.
20240322 It's our last day here as we head home for a little repair on the van, I will sure miss Deepwater the little town in NSW with fun locals and a great country pub, this is one place we are sure to return to and we only traveled just over 400Ks and had the best time. I't just goes to show you don't have to travel far to meet great people and have a few laughs.
