20210702 Qld Ravenshoe
20210702 Ravenshoe is the highest town in Queensland with a temperature rarely exceeding 26°C, it was once a proud town with a heritage of extracting timber from the surrounding forests. In the 1980s there was a battle between environmentalists and timber workers, this eventually led to the arrival of the flower power people and by the 1990 the town was home to many hippy. Today there are remnants of the town's hippie past but it is manily a rural service town and a tourist destination.
A fly by shoot of the scinic drive heading to Ravenshoe, it sure is pretty through this part of the world.
Windy Hill Wind Farm is Queensland's largest wind farm with 20 windmills producing enough power for 3500 homes and it is capable of a generating capacity of 12 megawatts, and the number of wind turbines is 20.
A nice town with a story to tell of times gone by but I'm happy to say I'm glad the environmentalists stepped in and stopped the loggin in the forrest.
There are still many historic building still standing and even the old theatre is now being used as a hair salon with many of the shops taken on a new lease life as a gift or 2nd hand stores.
The Ravenshoe Hotel was built in 1927, and is now owned by the great granddaughter of the original owners who bought it back about 4 years ago and together with her husband has done a brilliant job of preserving the 1920’s charm.
The enterance to the hotel is like stepping back in time with it's lovely 20s interier.
Established in 1911 the Club Hotel became a hub for the early settlers and timber-getters arriving in the district in search of 'red-gold' - the much sought after red cedar timber that was found along Cedar Creek
