20151026 SA Snowtown, Crystal Brook to Jamestown
20151026 After leaving the Yorke Peninsula we head to Snowtown a small
town located in the mid North of South Australia or 145 km north of Adelaide
and is more known for the Snowtown murders or bodies-in-barrels murders, could this be a hint.
This is where it all happened, in this bank where a series of
homicides were committed, and the trial was one of the longest and most
publicised in Australia history. Only
one of the victims was killed in Snowtown and none of the eleven victims, nor
the perpetrators were from the town. Motivation for the murders is unclear,
although the killers were led by Bunting to believe the victims were pedophiles,
homosexuals or “weak”. In at least some
instances, the murders were proceeded by torture, and efforts were made to
appropriate victims’ Centre link social security payments and bank funds. The murders however led to a short-term
economic boost from tourists visiting the town but created a lasting stigma.
The pub with the new beaut chef who catered for the exhausted
emergency services personnel of the 9/11 terrorist attack to crafting delicate
pastries for swanky pre-race gatherings on the Formula One circuit and I must
admit the meals were yummy.
The Mural depicts John Young and William Hall trading as Young & Co erected a
flour mill and large shed for storage of wheat on this site in 1879. The flour mill ceased working in 1911 and
with its high chimney as a landmark was demolished in 1923.
The Display Blade was presented to the people of Snowtown and
Wakefield in appreciation for their cooperation and support during construction
of the Snowtown Windfarm but I think it was more to take the stigma of the murders away from the town, or so we were told by a local.
27-10-2015 We survived the night in Snowtown but one night was enough as there is nothing to do in these small towns but they do have a lovely green football field a tennis courts that keeps them entertained.
We called into the lovely town of Crystal Brook which was named
after the spring-fed creek to which it was founded.
The wind farm stretched
along the hills as far back as the Yorke Peninsula they seemed endless.
A great way to advertise there’s a Ball in Jamestown.
Jamestown was named after Governor of the day Sir James Fergusson,
whose Scottish background is reflected in many of the street names.
The Jamestown Hotel was built in 1873, gee if only those walls could
talk.
The mural depicts the history of the Butcher shop that in 2012 was
the longest continuously serving butcher shop in south Australia
How
wonderful it would have been to see the old stores still standing.
