20220620 Qld Jericho, Barcaldine, lfrodcombe to Longreach

Image
20220620 There's no sence in hanging around in Jericho, we've been here in the past so it's straight onto Barcaldine along the Capricorn Highway, a long straight road that looks like it will never end and the scenery is untouched and quite pretty, you sure won't find any high rises out here just wide open space. It just feels the the road to were ever you want to go. In the outback the sceanery can change in the blink of the eye, hence why my camera sits on my lap ready for a quick snap of that scean that takes my interest, and this house on stilts on the hill got mine. And then there's this old queenslander that is falling down after many years of neglect, I'm thinking she would have been a beauty in its day. We then cross over into Outback Queensland, stretching from Carpentaria in the north, Birdsville in the west, Cunnamulla in the south and Tambo in the east, ya gotta love the outback. It seems everywhere we go I see this sign and now I know why. 🠟 I found...

20220618 Qld Sapphie, Alpha to Jericho

Image
20220618 It is in Sapphire where mining began in the 1800s and its still going strong today, the region is home to one of the richest sapphire fields in the southern hemisphere and if your keen on trying your luck you will need to to buy a fossicking licence first. The Pick, Shovel and Sieve, represents mining in this area. This General store and caravan park is all that operates in Sapphire. The creek bed at the back of the caravan park is dry but that didn’t stop some keen people trying there luck in panning and apparently your best opportunity of finding stones is at night when they sparkle. After wandering the streets we came across this gem shop where I was hoping to get my ring fixed, but unfortunately it could take a few months because the guy was so busy. The Monument commemorates Archibald John Richardsons discovery of sapphire and zicons on the retreat Creek here at Sapphire in the year 1878. We stopped for an ice cream at the top shop and even though it says it’s open an...

20220616 Qld Rollestone to Emerald

Image
20220616 Travelling Along the Great Inland Way on A7 until we reached Rolleston that’s situated on the Comet River.  We had lunch at the pub and as we’ve been here before we left to meet up with Wendy and her mates from Stradie. We arrived at our meeting place but there was no Wendy plus I couldn’t reach her by phone, all that could mean is, she’s out of range. Well we’re not staying here so we head towards Springsure hopping to see them along the way. Next the phone rang and the mystery of their ware about’s was solved, we are just out of Springsure at Virgin Rock and hurry up, I’m fighting off camper for your spot .   Spingsure is a rural service centre nestled below the Capricorn Highlands and the area is rich in black clay soil which produces crops of sunflowers, sorghum, wheat and chickpeas and let’s not forget the cattle also play a huge part in this are. After being introduced to Vince who is 81 and George his brother who are heading to Winton on there last trip we set...

20220609 Qld Roma to Eumamurrin

Image
20220609 Arriving in Roma we restock our supplies then head out to Bungeworgorai Creek, a free camp about 10km from Roma where Wendy has saved our  camp spot. The last time we were here we encountered a crazy lady with a heap of dogs who was very agitated and became abusive, stay away from one’s like that. The creek is higher this time and there’s heap of wood, what more could you want, we set up camp and settled in for a few days of games, reading, collecting wood and what ever else we wanted to do. We poured diesel down the centre of the log then stuffed paper down the guts, I placed it on the fire then waited for the flames to come up the centre but then Des got impatient and decided to chop it up, the idea was for the fire to burn from the inside out. https://youtu.be/rGu4N3vbkzw   Click to view Des singing the Lumberjack. It’s bloody freezing out here, I so wish I had a nice warm scarf to ware like Wendy’s.😏😅 Wendy cooks up a mean camp roast chicken and veggies and it w...

20220607 Qld Surat 2

Image
20220607 We sat around a lovely fire last night with a fellow camper talking about travel experiences or Des telling some of his stories that had us all laughing. W aking to a chilly morning in Surat so after a hot cuppa followed by breakfast we decide to rick the cold and go  exploring this town some more, and within this campground there’s stories of the history that was created right on this site. Sipping my cup off herb tea while I wait for that call from Des, Lee it’s ready then I crawl out of bed to be greeted with a nice hot breakfast. How app, these pair walking over the Balonne River Bridge with these pair speaking Balonne, not really I just thought I would throw that in.😜  The Balonne River is 479 km but did you know it’s the Condamine River which rises on the Darling Downs in Queensland then flows past Dalby and onward to Chinchilla, then flows south-west to the plains, where it meets the Dogwood Creek and becomes the Balonne River, near Surat, wow, what a river sy...
