20240910 NSW Gunnedah to Boggabri

20240910 We left Baan Baa and headed to Gunnedah, Des is looking for a Super Cheap to buy some oil for his radiator then we spotted a Vinnies, Des like to check these inland 2nd hand shops out for long sleeved shirts and he was lucky enough to find two. Back on the road again turned off at the town of Boggabri hoping to buy some eggs, they are in such short supply at the moment, we stopped on the edge of town and the elderly man we meet at the Baan Baa stopped beside us, in the middle of the road and started chatting. We walked the town had lunch and left looking for a camp for the night. The original town site was 20 km (12 mi) south and settled in the 1830s but was relocated after a flood washed it away in the 1850s.

We came upon this town mealie by accident, we needed eggs that seem to be in shortage so Des turned off hoping there’s an IGA, we got our eggs then walked the town.

The Town Clock on the corner as you enter the town.
One of the old buildings that line the Main Street.

The slug sculpture represents diversity and individuality and sits in the park in Boggabri.

This is the hot pink slug known only from Mount Kaputar which is part of a unique suite of unusual animals – known as the Mount Kaputar land snail, these strange molluscs have evolved in isolation for a very long time, trapped near the top of the mountain, that they’ve developed features unlike animals found elsewhere in the world.

The Commercial Hotel Old school country pub, with cold beer and a friendly atmosphere.

Royal Hotel was completed in 1909 and remains largely the same as when it was built.

From 1879 to 1881 a combined Post Office and Telegraph Station stood on this corner, mail was received three times a week then in 1881 the present Post Office was erected.

After lunch we left Boggabri looking for a camp and not far from town we pulled into the CWA rest stop, we’ve camped here before I said but Des couldn’t remember, we parked beside the table and I cleaned up rubbish and burnt it in the old fire pit, nop, can’t remember. There’s lots of traffic noise and some travellers stop late at night but are gone before we rise.
