20210405 NSW Uralla, Bendemeer, Tamworth, Moonbi, Kootingal, Calala to Attunga
20210405 Calling into Uralla for a bit of a walk and check out the town that's surrounded by rich fertile soil but unfortunately the town relies on the commuters from Armidale and tourist to keep the town alive. Uralla is described as "Thunderbolt Country", another town that takes it's claim to fame from a criminal # bushranger.
The Captain Thunderbolt monument stands in the main street, and is the main feature in the museum and his body lies in the towns cemetery, it's fascinating that a bushranger adds fame to a town but also interesting.
Established in 1881 and it's known as the Top Pub, as opposed to Thunderbolt's Hotel, at the other end of bridge Street, which is known as the Bottom Pub.
The Imperial Hotel or "The Bottom Pub" came to life in 1909 as a Victorian style Hotel.
Passing through Bendemeer and onto Nemingha for lunch at the local Hotel and I must say they cook a mean steak. Checking Wiki for a camp spot and I found a free camp one on Goonoo Goonoo Rd Tamworth, bugger it's only for competing Equestrians so back to the drawing board.
Apparently there's a painted water tank you can view so we set google maps to the destination and off we go. Chugging up this seep hill to the top of a lookout and do you think we could find any painted silo, apparently there's a walking track you are suppose to follow to view it but we couldn't even find that, well that was a waste of time but I did manage a photo of the view.
Skipping Moonbi and Calala towns, been there done that so onto Attunga where the free camp is just off the highway, this could be fun, NOT. Named after an Aboriginal word meaning "A High Place" which sounds odd considering it's all flat, after setting up I cross the road to check out the local pub and general store.
Yep, it's shut down until further notice but the unusual design pub is remembered by the locals as they have small engraved plaques mounted on the bar of the past patrons.
It was once a thriving little store that supplier fuel, takeaway food, cold drinks and a post office but I guess hard times hit them and it's now just a shell.
20210406 Well! that was a shitty nights sleep listening to the trucks continually passing by not to mention behind us is a mine that works around the clock, not happy Jan.😡 This is one camp I'm happy to leave behind as we pack up and head to our next town.
