20160221 Tas Nelson Fall, The Wall, Bardy's Lake to Wayatinah Village

Here we go again climbing up the windy roads to the mountain range, I can understand why the bikes love riding in good old Tassie and trust me there are lots of bikes.

After leaving Queenstown we climbed the once mountainous landscape of Lyell Hwy to much devastation caused from the mining activity over a 100 years ago.  Stripped in the 1890s and 1900s to provide wood for the mines smelting furnaces but it is slowly grown back.

We stopped at Derwent Bridge to check out the 35m high Nelson Falls the and its only a 20 min return trip.

The Wall In The Wilderness is Australia’s most aspiring art project undertaken in recent years.  Greg Duncan, creator/designer plans to carve the history of the highlands in 100 metres of timber, most of which will be in the rare Huon Pine, well worth a look.

Each panel is 1 metre wide and 3 metres high and the panels will be placed back to back so, by the time it is finished he would have created a wall 50 metres long with carvings on both sides - 100 metres all up

After the Wall we found a great camp spot on the edge of Bardy's Lake so we made the most of it and stayed for a few days.

We were having a few drinks with some campers and I took a liking to their man made table that folds into a milk create for storage, that cool Des you should make one.
24-02-2016 I could have stayed at the lake for ever if it wasn't for the bloody westerly winds and no wood anywhere. We turned off to check out Wayatinah Village one of the old ‘hydro construction villages’ which is now a peaceful little town nestled in the Derwent River, it's peaceful alright, there’s nothing here.

The large hydropower pipes as you enter the town which feeds water into the Liapootah Power Station.
Before you enter Wayatinah Village check out the Liapootah Power Station floral clock that has recently been restored by the locals.  I would have love to see the clock it in the spring when the 350 daffodils planted in the clock are in bloom.
