20230426 Vic Dartmoor

Image
I swear this bloody rain is following us but we found this quite rural town known for its  prime grazing land  on the Glenelg River that has this lush green camp grounds. As we entered Dartmoor it’s the many wood carvings lining the street that captures your attention, but first we need to find that camp spot with our name on,  and we scored our very own picnic table, this will do us for a couple of days. Cypress trees were planted prior to World War II by Dartmoor to beautify the roadside leading to the newly constructed road bridge over the Glenelg River. I t was the Atlantic Cedar Trees which were planted on 7th September 1918 to commemorate  WW1 Servicemen and Nurses from Dartmoor and District. The spectacular carvings were completed by chainsaw Sculptor Kevin Gilders. The carvings are on butts of nine trees, in a section of the Avenue of Honour within the town.  Trees identified as dangerous were lopped in 2006 and carved with suitable images and themes...

20230425 Vic Hamilton, Condah to Haywood

Image
20230425 We drove into the town of Hamilton and went in search for the sales yard where on Wiki there are showers, plus Des really wants to wash the van, man there’s heaps of big bugs that splatter all over the windscreen leaving behind a disgusting mess. While Des washed the van I ducked in for a nice hot shower, and returned all squeaky clean. With the van washed its now Desies turn only to return seconds later because the door was locked, opps I must of shut the door, lucky for me I went first, aw well, at least the vans all nice and clean. Hamilton town has the unusual honour of being the only significant settlement in rural Victoria which did not start as a port or a mining town. We stopped at the Green Hill Hotel for lunch forgetting it Anzac Day and the Pub doesn’t open until 2pm, but there’s a free camp so why not stay. The Greenhill Hotel was built in 1856 out of bluestone which was quarried locally and was first licensed in 1860, but unfortunately there’s cigarettes butt all ...

With Dimboola now behind us we set off for a new adventure and perhaps find another small town with as much excitement, but somehow I don’t think so, but every town has its own bit of buzz to offer that travellers passing through. We visited Horsham in 2018 so we are only stopping for supplies and to check out the new Silo Art in town. We found a new Mural. Yangga Dyata - Walking on Country Yangga Dyata (pronounced: Yanga Jarta) - Walking on Country art work celebrates the life and story of Wotjobaluk warrior -Yanggendyinanyuk, (Yang-gen-jin-a-nyook). His name means his walking feet', in Wergaia language. World renowned street artist 'Smug' was commissioned to transform Horsham's silo with the image of Yanggendyinanyuk, h is totem, the Black Cockatoo . Des dropped in a yabbie pot then wondered the ground while I grabbed a beer and watched a couple of animals frolicking in the water, at first I thought it was a couple of Platypus then Des returned saying he was just s...

20230420 Vic Dimboola Steampunk Festival

Image
You have to stay, said one of the locals who ran off to get us a brochure, what the hell is a Steampunk Festival, its a celebration of the weird and wonderful, there will be three stages with bands, street performances, lantern processions, trees that glow and buildings that are animated. Market and food stalls will line the main streets and vintage cars will complement the time travelling theme, it goes for three days and last year we had about 5000 people, well that just made Des even more Sceptical, “what” 5000, ya sure, but not me I'm always up for a festival, but what am I to ware. Well didn’t Dimboola show him, we were both in ore of how this small town could host such an extraordinary event, we had an absolute amazing time. This would have to be one of the most unusual and different festival we have ever attending, even Des is telling everyone we meet on the road about the Steampunk Festival in Dimboola and how awesome it was. After buying a Punk hat in town I amazingly used...
