20240530 Qld Yelarbon

Image
20240530 As we turn the bend into Yelarbon it was the new Silo Art that jumped out at us, Des had no choice but to stop as I grabbed my iPad and jumped from the van, Wow! Was my first thought. Yelarbon is a small town on the  Cunningham Highway  on the border of Queensland and New South Wales. We found it was a quite pleasant town with a small population of only 313, a small school, a pub and a cafe. Spectacular, and the only set so far in Australia to have this unique shape of two tall and six shorter silos all in row. The vision was to create an oasis in Yelarbon which sits on the edge of a spinifex desert. The town has now been in the grips of a drought for over two years, the mural concept titled ‘When the rain comes’ depicts a young boy at play, cooling off in the Yelarbon Lagoon with a paper boat that is set to float across the lagoon which will one day stretch across all shorter six silos. The paper boat is made from historical newspaper remnants that were found in the ...

20240525 NSW Coolatai to Texas

Image
20240525 Coolatai was our next town, which I now remember as the town we got flooded in after leaving Texas in 2021.   We arrived at Coolatai and had a rest then walked to the pub where we meet some of the friendly locals, one I remembered from our last stay in March 2021 floods. We were stuck here with all exist flooded in when a woman with her boys turned up to check on us, Shelly was her name and she would check on us daily and even gave us free power. The campground at Coolatai Hall. 20240526 It started to rain so we decided to stay another day, and what better to do than lunch at the Wallarooo Hotel when  three elderly chaps walked into the pub, locals I  assumed and one was quite pissed. He was a happy chap and started talking to me then looked at Des and said, Gee your punching above your weight, Des replied, no she is, the chap gave Des a strange look, then said to me, has he looked in the mirror lately. We weren’t sure what he meant but we all cracked up lau...

20240520 NSW Deepwater to Coolatai

Image
20240520 So here we are once again back in Deepwater and parked in our old spot, how special it is to be able to connect to power, it’s like luxury especially when you’re travelling. Later in the afternoon Chris, a guy we meet last time we were here came to say Hi, then we joined him in the bar for a few ales with more of the locals. 20240521 We had the heater going all night and the van in the morning is still bloody freezing, let’s travel in winter he says, it’ll be great he says, ya sure if you like freezing all night. Des goes outside to wash up and what he thought was a dish left behind turned out to be his frozen dish cloth, I told you it was cold.🥶  We left the Longhorn and headed back to the Common Campground for a few days, we have become very fond of the spot, it’s so peaceful and secluded and has heaps of wood. We had a great few days enjoying our surroundings with no one in site, just the occasional car passing by and the only evidence is the dust off the dirt road. No...

20240518 Qld, Wallangarra, NSW, Jenning’s

Image
20240418 So here we are once again back in the two towns on the border of Queensland and NSW, Wallangarra and Jennings where the only Post Office is situated in Wallangarra, and has a Queensland Postcode. Jennings, with no Post Office, has no Postcode of its own, and for years had to use the Postcode of Tenterfield, 20 km away. Despite many attempts by Jennings residents to be allocated their own Postcode, Jennings is now listed under 4383, which is the postcode for Wallangarra, making it the only town in NSW with a QLD Postcode. We camped up in the same spot next to the BBQ and settled in for a few days, there were a few campers scattered about the grounds sitting around their fires while relaxing and enjoying a wine or beer, as we do. Check out the impressive state border welcome sign that marks the gateway to Queensland at the small town of Wallangarra. The sign was inspired by the rallying cry of “Queenslander, Queenslander”, made famous by Marooons rugby league legend Billy Moor...
